Wow!! I was looking for jordans red hot dogs and I came across this sight.  I moved from Maine to New Hampshire in 92 and that was a small change, you couldn't find humpty dumpty potato chips or red hot dogs when I first moved.  I now live in North Carolina and I can't find any of the good stuff I grew up on, not even marshmallow fluff!!!  I am pregnant with my 3rd child and craving a great hot dog, unable to find it here.  They don't even put green peppers on their "subs" unless you special order them.  What a change, but I don't miss the shoveling.

Hi all.  I love reading this messages.... its awful nice to know that I ain't the only one missin' the only place on earth I'll ever call home.  I liked the comment that fella made about not having any Uncle Henry's where he is at.  Anyone remember the Big Deal?  With that guy Ray.  "Good morning, your on the big" "Ya Ray, I got me a 1974 Volvo wagon sittin' in the yahd, like to get a couple hundred bucks fuh thaht if I could.  Also looking for some tracta pahts for my John Deere."  God I hated my dad for making me listen to that, but now of course, I miss it.  I am glad to have made it home for the holidays with my parents and friends.  I hope the rest of you in Exile get home soon.

ps.  I ate 9 Whoopie Pies in 7 days.  I was WICKED happy 'bout that little feat.

Born and raised in Monson, just south of Moosehead Lake.  Left Maine in 1974 because of a job. I have managed to get home every year for Christmas and most years for a summer vacation.  I have a camp (people in California thought I meant like a YMCA or Boy Scout Camp! !) on Lake Hebron.
I miss the snow, but I don't seem to take the cold as well as I did 20 years ago!
I miss Jordan's red hotdogs.  I hate skinless franks.  I miss baked beans and biscuits on Saturday night (Remember those Baked Bean suppers at the church, or grange or fire hall?)
I miss snowbanks so high they had to be "winged" back around the end of January so the plows could push the snow out of the roads.
I miss a night so cold that when you walked on the snow it squeaked under your boots.
I miss the loons calling out on the lake.  I have a couple of cd's, but it isn't the same.
I used to be able to tell you who lived in every house on every street in town.  And I knew all the kids in grades 1 through 12.  Of course my graduating class was only 15! !  And they were so upset that they closed the school after I left!  If you believe that, you must be from Nastychusetts.
I miss tournament week in Bangor in February. With George Hale announcing all the games on the radio.
I miss the midnight bus rides returning from away basketball games.
It is unfortunate that there is nothing to keep all the young people from leaving the state.  And taking all their talents with them.
Who would have thought that there wouldn't be a Great Northern Paper Company forever in Millinocket?
And now even Dexter shoes won't be made in Dexter any more.
Something seems to happen when you cross the bridge from New Hampshire.  Remember when there was just the drawbridge and you could get stuck on a holiday weekend if there was an opening?  Or stopping at Valle's Steak House for dinner?

Speaking of good Maine food, what about "red flannel" hash?  My family loves it.

I am living here in Nevada with my husband and seven children.  I grew up in Dover-Foxcroft and just came here when I turned 26, so I had really never known anything but Maine before.  It sure is different.  I miss a lot of things about Maine, especially since my family is still there.  I miss the Uncle Henry's.  Around here, no one sells used stuff, and if they do, they want a lot of money for it.  I miss the comfortable down-home feeling of being in Maine.  There's nowhere else like it.  We hope to move back someday, but unfortunately there are no job prospects there right now.  My husband has a good job here as a lab technician in a diatomacious earth processing mill.  I just hope our kids are able to hang on to some memories of Maine.

Born & raised in Portland...missing the aroma of Maine's outdoors: the ocean, the waterfront, the balsams, the pines, the smell of snow on the way, the faint odor of skunk in early spring, the autumn leaves (sight and scent), boiling maple sap, beach roses... Working in the Nation's capitol, great job, interesting folks, just not home.  Not missing the snow too much, though!

` I am losing my mind. I need to get up north( way up north  ) where the trees aren't rotting or moldy, where there is more than 3 chickadees and where the smell of balsam can be had for  free ( instead of paying 6 bucks for a balsam pillow ) If anyone has a camp or knows anyone with a camp / cabin , they'd loan for free or relatively cheap, please e-mail me.

Thank you ( while I still have my sanity )

I've been laid up now with a bad knee & unable to walk for 3 months with another month to go before surgery & I am going stir crazy. To help me keep what little sanity I still pocess & help sooth my longing for Maine I've been cooking up a storm of Yankee fare & my hungry neighbors have been circling like sharks....Clam Cakes, Boston Baked Beans & Brown Bread...Clam & Fish Chowders (New England of course)...Johnnycakes & Corned Beef Hash to name a few...I've even made Italian Sandwiches & Lobster Rolls. It hasn't helped my weight any (no one could ever call this stuff diet food...just thinking about making some of it is enough to harden your arteries) but damn its good. I even considered making some Whoppie Pies, I didn't but I did make a Boston Cream Pie. SIGH!!! Anywho...any good suggestions in the way of Maine Cookbooks?

To Alice from Rochester MN:

Good grief, you made me hungry! The only thing you didn't have was one of those cremepuff things. I han't been to Maine for 26 years and I been in the "deep South" long enough.

Just wonderin' if there are any M.I.E's in or around Frederick-Baltimore-Washington area. If so, send me a line.

Take care - happy, healthy and safe 2003.

I was born and raised in Bangor til I moved here 9 years ago.  I left since being young I wanted more opportunities and being right near NYC is it.  I miss my family the most and the genuineness of the people.  I need a spiritual refresher every once in awhile just to get up there and have people care.  Just wanted to say hi to all my fellow Mainiacs.  I still get excited when I see a ME lobstah plate on the highway.  Take care!!

haven't dropped a message in some time but I tend to keep track of those who do.  Can anyone help a Maniac with two items.  How do you make good "Maine" Clamcakes and a good clam chowder.  Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.
