Haven't posted in about a year. Still missing Maine and longing until my husband can retire at 52 (another 15 yrs)! and we can make our way back to what will always be considered my "home." The occassional trip up to visit family and ski just doesn't cut it anymore....am missing apple-picking season the most (the crisp air and fall leaves)and even the tiny Augusta/Gardiner area. Oh, what wonderful Cony memories! Have yet to hear from anyone from the same area of Maine, but I keep hoping! Happy Easter, Mainers-at-heart! Relax and Enjoy.

It's been a long time since I've posted. For 23 years we roamed the world compliments of Uncle, always knowing that we would return to Maine.  Retired from the Army in the Wash DC area and I could've chased the beltway bandit money - but we wanted to be home, with family, and with fresh lakes, and awesome lighthouses, and the great smell of a spring day.  Happiness means more than $$.

I read MIE 3-4 times a week the last four years before we came home and got so psyched reading everyone's messages.

It's not perfect, no place is, but it sure comes pretty darn close.  God bless all.

In Jan. I flew home to Maine on a great ($109) rate from Houston. Couldn't resist. It had been 18 years since I'd had a winter visit. I got to make a snow angel on a "snow" day, after helping shovel part of the driveway. I loved chipping the ice out of another driveway and enjoyed the whole two weeks. I was tickled by the sound my boots made on the snow, and that that sound seemed familiar. Our memories are so precious and to bring them out in the open to experience again is such fun.

I miss my vacation river frontage on Big Wilson Stream, near Monson. Wish there were some jobs up there, so I wouldn't have to settle for seeing it once a year!

MY NAME IS PAUL HAZARD. I SPENT MOST OF MY CHILDHOOD IN CUTLER, EAST MACHIAS AREA. ATTENDED A TWO-ROOM SCHOOLHOUSE NEAR CUTLER "GEORGE L BUCHNAM.   ME AND TWO GIRLS IN KINDERGARDEN FIRST GRADE (LIVED WITH GRANDMOTHER "VIOLA FOSS").   THEN MOVED TO EAST MACHIAS. MYSELF AND 32 KIDS 2ND, 3RD GRADE "ELM STREET SCHOOL".

MY MOM MET AND MARRIED A SAILOR, WE MOVED TO ALASKA, FLA, AND BACK TO CUTLER.   MYSELF AND SAME 2 GIRLS IN 6TH GRADE. THE BASE (CUTLER) THEN STARTED SENDING US TO ELM STREET AGAIN, SAME 32 CHILDREN.

LEFT IN 1978 FOR THE LAST TIME. JOINED US NAVY 1982, TRAVELED THE WORLD BUT STILL CAN'T GET MAINE OUT OF MY HEAD. I MISS HER. CURRENTLY ASSIGNED TO NAVAL COASTAL WARFARE GROUP TWO.

I MISS THE SMELL, I MISS NOT LOCKING MY DOORS AT NIGHT.   I MISS THE PURITY AND SIMPLICITY OF LIFE.

WHO CAN SAY THEY CARRIED WATER FROM THE WELL.     HOW MANY POPLE KNOW WHAT A PISS-POT IS.     HOW MANY OF YOU WATCHED YOUR GRANDFATHERS HANDS BLEED ON THE MUD FLATS TRYING TO DIG OUT A LIVING FROM THE SEA FLOOR.

HOW MANY OF YOU RAKED BLUEBERRIES FOR 12 HOURS A DAY TO PAY FOR YOUR SCHOOL CLOTHES.       WHO KNOWS WHAT TIPPING IS.

HAVE YOU EVER STOOD IN THE WOODS KNOWING THTA NO OTHER PERSON IN THE WORLS HAS EVER STOOD IN THIS SPOT.

IT MAY SOUND LIKE I AM COMPLAINING, BUT I'M NOT, I WOULD NOT TRADE THOSE DAYS FOR ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD. I ONLY WISH I COULD SOMEHOW PASS ON TO MY CHILDREN THE LESSONS I LEARNED GROWING UP IN THE WOODS.

I MISS MY HOME, I HAVE CALLED 20 STATES AND 4 COUNTRIES HOME OVER THE YEARS, BUT MAINE IS TRUELY MY ONLY HOME.  I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM SOME OLD FRIENDS, FEEL FREE TO WRITE.

After moving to Va Beach, VA to start a new business three years ago, we finally realized this isn't "the way life should be"!!! We are moving back in the summer and can't wait. We thought the mild winters would be great but we miss a good snowstorm. The quality of life has become more important than ever and my kids would like to be able to survive high school(literally).
See you all soon, Bill, Linda, Charlie @ Katie Knipp

Spring treads softly in Maine, at least in the beginning. Piles of rotting snow are broken up by the power of delicate crocus & daffodills poking out at the sun. Is there anything so beautiful than the brilliant yellows, purples & blues splashed against the drab gray white of old snow? The ground becomes squishy with mud & the grass renews itself with emerald green. The sky when clear takes on a clarity seen only in the seasons of change, fall & spring yet the light is different. In the autumn there is a sharpness to it unique to that time of year yet in the spring it is so soft like babies breath. My toes curl with antisapation & the ladies never look so lovely than they do is spring's golden light.
To change the subject I came across a micro-beer down here called "Mud Bock Spring ale" I said to the sales clerk with a name like tha..... got to be out of New England, sure enough its from Middlebury Vt. Tasted pretty damn good too.
Enjoy this time of year...winter without cold & snow is simply dull & boring, spring a blessed relief.

Sylvia (Lorings of Augusta) and I tried South Florida for a spell - got back to the farm in Palermo and business in Hallowell in time for blackflies.  Did develop a taste for sushi, though.

We just met the famous children's book writers, Justine Korman and Ron Fontes who've settled in Readfield.  They've begun writing a comic series about a sixteen year-old Maine boy from Moose Harbor who out-migrates to the CITY to seek his fortune.  Anyone who ever left Maine looking for greener pastures may enjoy this growing anthology - you can find them at

It's wicked good fun.

Hi Mainiacs - ("Mainers" will never sound just right to me; but a rose by any other name...etc.)

My husband and I just went home for a few days.  It was a wonderful visit; but too short!!  I was surprised at some of the changes, particularly the price of houses and even apartment rentals.  I also noticed the high grocery store prices and was amazed by the high property taxes.  What is happening to "Life the Way it Should Be"?...it sure is getting expensive!!  We had thought of moving back; but our eventual retirements will never allow it.

I miss so many things about Maine; but I think the one thing that I miss the most (besides lobster, red hot dogs, cains relish, fried clams, wonderful bakeries, etc.) is the sincerity of the people.  "We am what we am and that's all that we am".  Bless you all.

Hello Mainers.  Washington State is ablaze with blooming flowers and green grass.  At least where I live.  Rainy and windy, with sun coming out now and again.  But not cold.  Hope Maine gets some of this rain so their wells don't dry up.  Have a great day all you Mainers.  Going back in May.  Can't wait.

I was born in Bath, Me. and was raised my whole life there. I graduated from Morse High School in 1968
I left Maine to go to school in the Boston area, then choose to stay there to work. I got married and moved to Texas, then to
Virginia, then to Panama South America, then back to Newport News, Va. This is where I have resided for many years.
My ex-husband was in the Military and that is why we came here and stayed. I miss home a lot, the nice fresh air, my folks home on a lake, my old home in Bath. I miss my old friends and of course my brothers are all still up in Maine. which I miss tremendously.
