I was born in Portland, raised in Scarborough,
then exiled to live in S.C. by marrying a military
guy. Really miss Italian Sandwiches (they
don't know what one is down here!),distinct 4
seasons and snow at Christmastime. Does anyone
know how I can get an Italian sandwich shipped FedEx
down here? :-)

I am so happy that I ran
across this page for ordering "red hot
dogs"!. People just don't know what a
great hot dog this is - especially in Texas!.
We make one trip home (Maine) every year and guess
what comes back with us (Red hot dogs), but now we
no longer have to panic when we take the last
package out. Thanks

One Christmas many years
ago while I lived in Portland, I was going through a
rough period in my life. Fortunately I have always
been blessed with friends & with their help I
was able to pull through it. This one couple &
their 3 young boys were especially supportive with
their encouragement.
As the holidays rolled around I decided
I wanted to get them each something as a thank you.
He wasn't hard, I bought him a nice bottle of wine.
She was a little more difficult. Eventually I
settled on some incense & candles. The boys,
aged 2 to 5 remained. I racked my pointly little
head trying to figure out what one thing I could get
that they each would love. I couldn't think of a
thing.
I wandered the Olde port checking out
each shop...no, books wouldn't do because of their
age differences...toys were ruled out as well &
so were games. Finally I was ready to give up when I
found it. Ya know how sometimes a gift just jumps
out at you & says I'm perfect, take me home?
Well this one did of that I am sure. Checking my
pennies I found I didn't have enough & I left
dejected.I was still partially employed & money
was very tight.
I wandered down to the Salavation Army
store just to poke around & think. While
checking out the books I came across a complete
Enclycopedia Britannica from the 20's. They wanted
$5.00 for the whole set. Surely it must be worth
more than that I thought so I bought it, loaded it
into a shopping cart & forced that damn thing
through the snowy, slushy streets to the base of
Munjoy Hill & Carlson Turner Used Bookstore
& lugged it in.
After an examination of the books &
some negoitions I walked out of there with almost a
hundred dollars & as happy as could be. It
was a 13th edition Britannica with articles by
Enstien, Freud & the like. A rarity.
I hurried down to the toy shop
& bought my gift. It was a bear to wrap but we
got it done & off to their place I went.
I gave him his wine & her the
incense & candles. Then I lugged into their
apartment this huge, almost 3 feet across,
giftwrapped sphere & told the boys it was for
them. They tore into it as only little kids can
& paper went flying everywhere. It was soon
revealed as a large 2 1/2 foot, round, cotton pillow
with a simple map of the earth printed on it. I had
given my friends children the only thing we can give
them, the world. When I left later that night all
three were curled up asleep on it. Merry Christmas.

I am originally from Bar
Harbor, ME. I have now been away for over 15
years. I try to get back and see my family at
least once a year and inhale some of that great
ocean and island air. I miss the ocean, but am
now closer to the ocean than I have been in over
five years. I am an active duty naval medical
officer and would eventually like to come home to
Maine when I retire. Hopefully, it WON'T be
full of tourists when I get there.

"Away"... family born and bred in Maine
but I was born in NJ... lived 25 years in Maine, but
have moved for work... and find myself far away
now... Here's my question... What's the best
"red" hotdog... I liked the Jordan's but
my favorite was the ones produced in Augusta by
Kirschner's... What do other's think...?

I was born and raised in Argyle Township, just
north of Old Town. At the time, the population was
"198 and a few old soreheads" according to
the sign at the town line. Lived in that
area till I was 42, then moved to Atlanta with my
second hubby when he was transferred.
What do I miss most? My family, including my
1.5-year-old grandson! And the fall weather.
NOTHING beats September in Maine. I do not
miss the snow and cold one teeny bit, though.
Or the blackflies or the mosquitoes, either. I
miss having Baxter State Park and Schoodic Point
within an hour's drive, and having miles of
cross-country ski trails in my back yard. OK,
maybe I do miss the snow a teeny bit after all.
I graduated from Old Town High School in '74, just
in case there are any classmates or '73 or '75 OTHS
Exiles out there reading this.

leave I start counting the days til I can go back.

To A R in Seattle, Washington........I have a cat
named Moxie too. She is black and white tuxedo cat,
and my husband brought her home one night about a
year ago, after finding her wandering around near
the local dump. She is a wonderful hunter, and has
officially claimed the job of "boss" in my
horse barn. Could not resist calling her moxie,
because she truly has "moxie"!!! By the
way Wayne, it has been in the high 70's and low 80's
the last two weeks here in North Carolina too, and
getting the Christmas spirit is a bit tricky. I went
and picked out a tree yesterday, and I had to dress
in shorts. Go figure!!! Bring on the snow. Last
white Christmas we had here was in 1989, and I am
WAY overdo for another. Happy Holidays to all you
exiles, and PEACE!!!

Hi, I'm Originally from The Hill In Portland, I
have been in Charlotte since '93. I took a week off
back in the end of July. This is really Cliche,
but.... So Much has changed, yet so much is still
(well, More or less) the same. It's cool to see that
you can still get a bucket of Ziti at Amato's for
under $5....barely.
Too bad to see that Aunti Leoni's, as well as the
Cheesecake Pizza place on Exchange are no Longer in
existance... Both of them were my favorite
Pizza places.
One funny thing....I never used to like Moxie. Hated
the stuff. Avoided it it like the plague, but just
for the hell of it, I went bought a bottle of it,
when I was up there, and, uh.... I liked it. Funney,
eh?

Okay, I know this isn't a
geneology site but I'm stuck on finding my dad's
half brother and sister that are out there
somewhere. I was born and raised in maine...along
with all of my ancestors...so lets see if anyone out
there may have known a Juanita Brown... she married
a Robert Marquis in 1937 or so... they were divorced
before '46. But I believe they had two kids
from the marriage... Roberta Marquis and Gary
Marquis...we think...nothing seems to be certain at
this point but there was definitely a roberta
Marquis... she may have moved to CT at some
point.... please email me if you have any leads...
My dad didn't know his father...and just recently,
his fathers family contacted us... my dad, who had
hardly any relatives to speak of, now has 16 cousins
and 1 living aunt who's 92. Crazy...all from
around the Millinocket area. So we're all
trying to work together and find the last 2 missing
pieces of the puzzle. Let me know if anyone
has some possible leads... on Juanita, or Roberta
and Gary Marquis...Thanks Kate

Well now its Dec.6th &
here in Roanoke it was 75 yesterday &
approaching that today. Excuse me!!! It is December.
Where's the cold biting air, blustery winds &
swirling leaves against a severe blue sky. Where's
the threat of snow & hard frosts? A friend who
just moved up to Maine told me Portland got its
first snow round abouts the 27th of November. I am
jealous. I've never been a big fan of winter
perfering to find an old hollow log & just sleep
through it instead. BUT...this is absurd. I WANT
SNOW!!!
