Hi to all you fellow Maineiacs,
Getting my travel trailer packed to head up to Maine for a 2 month stay. Will feel like living in a sardine can, but hey........if I am in Maine, I can put up with a lot!!! After not being home for over two years, it is a trip well-deserved! Hope to leave on the 8th of Aug. and return sometime in the middle of October. Will get to spend September there, and to me, it is my favorite month as far as Maine is concerned. Trees are just beginning to turn, and the tourists have all gone back to where ever they came from. Plan on staying at a campground near Belfast, which is my home town, and visit with all my friends and relatives. Hope to eat all the lobstah I can afford, and smell those old clam flats I used to haunt as a child. Also want to locate some red dogs, moxie, and pig out on whoopie pies. Oh, how wonderful it will be to not hear a southern accent for 2 months!!!!

Wayne in Las Vegas touched on something interesting & now it has got me curious. Just what would it take for anyone of us to stop gripping & pining & return to Maine for good? I know what it would take me...the death of my parents long may they live & the subsquent release from those obligations. But then I am not sure even then if I would return to Maine or be happy being back somewhere in New England as I personally love the whole region. What do the rest of you say?

Geez...I meant Clam Festival as opposed to "Clan" Festival. You know in Yarmouth(incidentally that's where I grew up as well).  Sorry about that.

Hi! It's been a while since I posted last but I moved a little closer to Maine(from Lowell, MA to MAnchester, NH) although I can't say that NH is any better than Mass.  I was at the clan Festival two weekends agao and have to say that my niece did a fine job in the Diaper Derby on Sunday...even though she did not leave the start line...at least she tried a little. RE: Loring AFB...I think the proper address was in Limestone, ME.

5 Top Reasons To Live (Re-live) in Maine.
  1. Losbster
  2. Other seafood
  3. Four seasons
  4. The Ocean
  5. Relatives

5 Reasons I cannot live in Maine (For awhile)
  1. State Income Tax (None here)
  2. High Property tax (Gamblers pay it here)
  3. Much Snow (Mainly in the moutains here)
  4. Low Wages (I was offered a job at 75%)
  5. Relatives

:)

But all-in-all I will keep looking for that job and when I find it I will move back. If not I will wait until I retire (less taxes). I will visit again in 2003. Enjoy your stay.

Sharon Oliver Knape (Snowblockers8258@aol.com) -- Omaha, NE
I

was born in Boothbay Harbor Maine, and lived in Georgetown and Five Islands till I was ten.  My mother Grace Pierce Oliver was a single mom with three children, and met our step father Paul Thompsen when he was stationed in Maine.  Paul was from Omaha, and we moved from Maine when I was ten.  I miss the smell of the salt air, the dense forests, the ocean, the small town feel of Maine.

I have lived in the mid west for over 40 years.  I have all my relatives back there.  My grandfather Wallace was a light house keeper and his father before him.  Wallace was the light house keeper at Breakwater.  My land our home was on in Georgetown has been in the Oliver family  since l629.  My roots go deep in Maine.  I would have my Uncle Fran send me pine balsam pillows every so often so I could travel back to my childhood forest by way of my sense of smell. I plan to go back this September and stay a long while.  It has been way too long.

I just returned from a conference in Arizona where the daily temp for the 2 week period was 105+....I live in Mass but boy did I miss the ocean of Maine...There is something about the Maine waters and the feeling it gives peope who just stand or sit and watch and listen to the waves....I have a couple of timeshares at the Samoset in Rockport, Maine and always want to go back and relax...I don't think we realize how much we miss something until we don't have it anymore....That statement is true for many lifesituations, not just the state of Maine...But being a Mainer is something to be proud of....it truly is the way life should be...Enjoy the rest of the summer....and keep thinking about Maine....

I am pleased to hear that the audobahn society (at least thats who I think did it) aquired cow island off great diamond in casco bay. It is so good beacause too much of the south & mid coast has been turned into wealthy developments & the locals are being pushed out. One of Maine's biggest problems is too much of the resourses are owned by out of staters who rape it for profit & give nothing back. It would be good if the state committed a portion of its income into buying back what it can & encouraging local ownership but then what do I know?

:I have seen lately that it is almost southern hot in Portland this summer. The one thing I remember most about my time there was the wonderful cooling sea breezes that blew in off the islands in the afternoon cooling things down & often bringing with it fog to coat the city in a lovely evening haze. I have a good friend, a co-worker who will be moving to portland this september (the best month of the season) & I hope the place welcomes him with open arms as he is a good fellow. It has been awhile since I've been able to get on via our local libiary computers for some reason. Be that as it may I will try not to be a "rabble rouser". Hello to all.

Maine certainly is a great place  One that I miss every day.     This site and  those who contribute to it do much to add to my memories of home and certainly make my day much more enjoyable.   To those who complain about having to drive 6 or 8 hours to get back to Maine I can only say that, given that choice, I would gladly drive 6 or 8 hours each weekend just to be back in the state.   Consider yourself fortunate to be that close.  Best wishes to all.

I was born and raised in Maine.  And have been living away for the past 20 years. Due to a recent divorce, I'm re-evaluating my life and thinking about returning, and living in Bangor.  Could anyone tell me how the job market is?  I'm a burned out social worker but have been doing medical billing.

I finally made it back!!  After living away for the past 15 years we moved back to my ol' stomping grounds here in the Bangor area last month.  And let me tell you it feels great!  After living in the Nebraska panhandle for years it's wonderful to be smelling pine trees and salt air.  I'm here to stay this time.

I've been reading a lot of messages talking about some of the things that are unique in Maine such as Italian sandwiches and Moxie so I thought I'd put in my two cents worth.  Don't forget about the Needhams at Lou-Rod Candy, Inc. on Sabattus Street in Lewiston.  Not to change the subject--I've driven down the East River Road and the Townhouse Road in Whitefield many times during the summer months.  It's just beautiful!  The land in the area is outstanding.

Hadn't checked in for awhile - it really does make me so homesick to read about home - and home will ALWAYS be Maine - doesn't matter where I physically reside, there really is no way to take Maine from my soul!!  There are lots of things I miss that are related to Maine but I guess the most important thing is the people - I still have true, real friends there.  I've managed to make acquaintances with folks in other parts of the country but they will never replace those who still are in Maine.
For now, we are in CA because my husband's Mom is getting older and we need to be near her.

I have been back to Maine last November and again in February - both for family things - I'll be missing a family gathering this weekend - gosh, I miss being home.  It doesn't help matters that one of my two bosses, along with his wife (neither of whom is from Maine) have just moved to Brewer - they had visited Maine a number of times and since his wife retired, they made the move and are very happy there - he is here in CA right now covering for the other boss who is on vacation - our work is mostly computer-based so we can do it from anywhere - he chose Maine - smart guy I'd say!!
Guess I should have had the boss bring a lobster, an Italian, a couple of red hot dogs.... oh well, next trip home I guess!

"Mainiacs away from Maine are truly displaced persons, only half alive, only half aware of their immediate surroundings. Their inner attention is always preoccupied and pre-empted by the tiny pinpoint on the face of the globe called Down East. They try to live not in such a manner that they will eventually be welcomed into Paradise, but only so that someday they can go home to Maine."
