Just got back in from practicing the time honored traditon of
covering the plants before the frost gets 'em...the reward
is not in keeping the plants going, but the warmth you feel
when you get back in the house...that's sort of like being
in Maine, isn't it? I'll take what I can get..Listen, in
New England, we had two seasons...Winter....and getting
ready for it...What we consider to be a fine autumn rain is
considered here to be a raging blizzard...Anybody have any
time honored Maine traditions they want to share with us?
Any Sanford VFW members remember Ben Nadeau?

Just got back from a week long stay in the most beautiful place
in the world. Was there for peak-week and even though it
rained,and rained,and rained,the leaves were still beautiful
and the food was still the best on the planet. Got to go to
Acadia on the only day it didn't rain and watched a dumb
tourist nearly get swept into the ocean at Thunderhole.
Brought home some chocolate donuts,Humpty Dumpty jalapeno
chips, and some Moxie (which was mostly for novelty sake).
Can't wait to return in a few weeks for Christmas for my
third trip home this year!! What a great use of vacation
time and money. For all you that don't think you can get
away for a trip home-GO! you'd really be glad you did.P.S.
Went to Pat's Pizza and ate everything in site....mmmmmmmmmm

I have been an "Exile" for more than 20 years while I served our

the Navy and moving back to our great home state the end of
this month!! We were up this weekend house hunting (during
all the rain!) and will build our own house next summer.
Can't wait to get back!
For Joanne Smith of Dublin CA: The rain was all over the
state, but southern Maine took the worst of it. More than
10" in Brunswick while we were there and Biddeford/Saco got
even more.

My parents were born and raised in the Camden area. When Dad
retired from the army, we moved to Hope. I have grown up
with a sense of independence and comfort in solitude that
only a child raised in the mountains can appreciate. I
returned with my family last summer and fell in love all
over again, especially with the fresh crystal clear water
that Kansans can appreciate because its either the city pool
or brown opaque pond water if you want to go swimming.

Ugg....it's October, the leaves are changing, the nights are
cool(at HOME), and I am so homesick it ain't funny. Like
the geese in the winter, my heart yearns with everything in
it to head to the place that my heart screams out to be!
I'm taking care packages of leaves ....please remember me as
you rake them up. I long for enough to teach my children to
walk thru and jump in. I want to dump them all over my back
yard, rake them up and then burn them.
This HAS to be the hardest time to be away from home....to
live in a land where there is no difference between apple
juice and apple cider!
Will barter sand for leaves! homesick to the hilt.

I was born in Ashland and went to school in Mars Hill; graduated
in 1955. I remember this time of year when they would shut
the school down for a few weeks so we could pick 'taters to
buy school clothes. What a drag it was getting up at 4:00 am
every morning and heading out to the fields in the dark.
Sometimes the field was frozen and they couldn't dig until
the sun warmed the soil so the men would break up a couple
barrels and pour gasoline on them and start a big bond fire.
Everyone would sit around talking. I used to dig up a couple
'taters and toss them into the edge of the fire. Man, were
they tasty. We used to cut an alder bush and sharpen on end
to a point and screw small 'taters onto it and we could whip
them way across the field. Lots of work sometime, but also a
lot of fun. ACI in Mars Hill recently had a whole school
reunion. I have the address on someone that has a 6 hour
video of the three dayshe is selling. Get hold of me by
e-mail if you're interested.
