Deah Exiles,
Today we are havin' one of our beautiful balmy spring
days...yup! A real Nor'eastah. Yesterday the ground was bare
and I swore I could see a hint of green in the grass. Today
about 8 to 10 inches of white stuff has come down but it's
hard to tell because it is twirlin' around so much. Do you
remember storms like this? I missed Steve King's 'Storm of
the Century' (heard it twern't very good) but what we're
experiencing today has got to be pretty darn close...by
gorry! If you're desperate from some news about Washington
County, give a holler deah. Until you can git back home for
a spell, take care.

Just got back from a five day visit "home" We partied our fool
heads off, slayed a bunch o' lobstas, ate fried clams,
humpty dumptys, italians etc etc. I'm still going thru Maine
withdrawals. I would love a few good recipes, lobsta stew,
whoopie pies and clam chowda. If I can make these favorites
once in a while I might survive this exile.
Hello to all fellow MIE, especially the ones from in and

Hi fellow exiles!
I have posted a couple of times in the past. I also have
sent some of you emails that I felt we might have had common
interest in. So to those of you whom I have met Hi! I am
from Portland PHS '65 and I left back in Sep 65 to serve
our country I have been between Maryland, Virginia and
Pennsylvania since. I read these posts and usually get
misty eyed remembering my lost youth and all those simple
things that I now hold so dear.
Drop me a line if you like, would like to hear from you. The
best to all of you!

I miss Main and while surfing the net I came across this born in
Maine and living in exile. After being gone for so many
years this really gives you a touch of nostalgia. I was
raised in Portland and lived on the Hill until economics
became bad and moved down to the waterfront. From our
apartment we could see Casco Bay lines and Boones
restaurant. Even though the area was depressed I can look
back at the many friends we had and good times.
I and my sisters went to Portland High and after graduating
they left to other parts all of the country. I left for the
service and it was close to 40 years before I came home
again. Since then I have managed to go back in a May each
year. I can now go to Amarto for one of their great Italian
sandwiches with the Pepsi, and go to Munjoy Hill and look
over Casco Bay. That beats any restaurant in Los Angeles.
I enjoy walking the waterfront even though it's not the
same. What ever happened to Trident Packing Co.? I know it
was on Brown's wharf.
Anyone from my era I would really enjoy receiving email.

It's been a while since I visited this site. As the internet
expands, so do my connections to home. Nice to be able to
read Portland Press Herald, Mount Washington Observatory, as
well as Lewiston paper. Born in Bangor some 35 years ago,
most of my extended family live in and around Bethel. Folks
here in Chicago were amazed at our 20" snow in January.
"Once in a century storm" they proclaimed. I told friends
that up in Bethel, 20" snows are one to two times per month
in a normal winter. Anyway, I miss the White Mountains, the
Ocean, the Old Port, and Sunday River Brew Pub. Most of all
though I miss my family and the good people of Maine. I used
to miss Devil Dogs, but as of this month, they're available
here in Chicago!! Take care all, and if you're exiled in
Chicago area, don't be afraid to e-mail me!!

Hello Again!! Did any one happen to see the 'made-for -t.v.
movie',,'Storm of the Century that recently 'aired' on ABC
a couple of weeks ago???A friend taped it,,and I just
watched it over the week-end ,,Just wondered what you
thought??Where was it filmed,,etc..I had to chuckle at how
most of the movies that are about Maine,,or situated in
Maine,,that they just can't seem to get the propah'
'intonation' of the real 'Down East ' accent,,sounds more
like Scottish, or some such!!!??Yo! What's up with that???!!
And,,,they never get the comraderie of 'banterin' around
quite right!! C'mon, STEPHEN!! GET IT RIGHT!!! Still, I
guess,,it was'nt so bad a movie,,I found alot that related
to his first movie,,' The Shining'!! Even had a little
unruly kid that would not go to bed without bein' tucked in
by his Dad,,looked so much like 'little Danny' from the
'Shining',,and the red messages, 'Give Me What I
Want,,etc,,like 'REDRUM'...anyway,,wonder what island
'Little Tall' actually is...off Machias??? and don't
remember where the 'Reach' is located...Could some of you
enlighten me??? One of my favorite song artists wrote a song
called 'The Reach' [Dan Fogelburg],,so, I related to that in
this movie...Hope to hear from you about this!!!! Also,,My
Mom who lives in Southwest Harbor, told me that Mr.King was
filming a movie last year in that town,,around October I
believe,,is it the Message In a Bottle ??? Would like to
have more info about it...Thanks to all of you that sent me
recipes,,and look forward to you sharing more,,and if you
would like some in return from the Mid-West,,let me
know..Need plenty of Maine THANGs around these heah parts!!!
Thanks!! Mindi,,oh, still hoping to find fellow classmates
from Narraguagus High,,in Harrington '73-74' Don't see any
messages from folks 'round that neck of the

For a tough guy, this message board can certainly make me
emotional.
Everytime I read about an Amato's sandwich, a Bill's pizza,
Maine lobster, the rocky coast, it all brings tears and
lumps to my throat. We will be heading home in 18 months
after 22 years around the world with the Army. I've spent so
much money over the years getting back and hanging out - but
it was all worth it. Love having picnics at Ft Williams,
camping on Sebago, driving along the Kennebec in Gardiner.
I wear my U Maine ball cap all the time, even got my
daughter starting college at Orono in Sep 99! That was a
major coup on my part, but it was her choice.
Truly love this site - will write again in a couple months.

Hello fellow Exiles! I'm a 1990 Cony graduate and missing
things about Maine. Left Jan 91 for the Air Force which
took me to Mississippi, Germany and eventually to Washington
state (nothing more like Maine than Washington). The west
coast certainly has nothing on it's east coast counterpart.
Where did these people learn how to drive? Why don't they
know what an italian is? (Thank goodness for Subway. They
sure try to get close.) Why do the people here have such a
funny accent? Why do they give you a fork when they serve
you a lobster? I sure am glad that I had a Maine

that have been to Maine, all over the world.

Hardly ever go to a 5-hanky "womens'" movie, but saw Message
Bottle for the scenery and was not dissapointed. Two lovers
with little or no visible means of support. Does her
upscale Chicago apartment cost more than his Popham cottage
would in the summer? Been to both places and would place
the higher rent on the partly-unemployed shipwright for
having the higher rent. Hope the folks on the east side of
BBay Harbor skinned the movie people for hiding all the
lobster pots to make it look like NCarolina. The movie people
missed one scene with an onboard gearbox which could only be
on a lobsterboat. Anyway, the LA Times said it was
"picture postcard scenery".. Exile men.. buy your ladies 5
hankies and see postcars scenery that we moved away from.

Graduated from Gorham State in '70 and left Maine for Conn. Then
20 years ago my husband and I moved to Texas. It's another
world! I get to Maine each summer and enjoy the delicate air
(it's so humid here), black raspberry ice cream, beautiful
ocean, and Schoodic Point. I have to get "filled up" each
summer to make it through the rest of the year. It's almost
a physical thing.
I still "dress my feet", have a "dooryard", think beans are
the main meal, not just a sidedish for hamburgers, and make
biscuits with "Bakewell cream", and use the yellow box of
Bell's seasoning for my turkey and meatloaf. Maine is a
state of mine.

delicate air, the ice cream (black raspberry is me favorite)
Schoodic Point, and collecting sea glass. I m relaxed there
and can talk without remembering to keep the "r's" in my

mud-puddle brown water come on shore was disgusting. Gulf

We are both originally from Auburn. How can you lost what
you miss most? Is there anything I don't miss? Most of all
this. The green, the smell of clean air, the type of people
who live there, restaurants that are not a chain, Sam's

Born in Maine, worked most of my life in Maine except during WW

I left Maine to go to college (in PA) and then graduate school

just doesn't understand why Lake Michigan isn't just as good
as the freezing Atlantic. I miss the bracing air, the smell
of salt and pine (and even mud flats at low tide!), the food

seem suffocating while you're trying to grow up, but having
people know your business is better than having everyone
just try to ignore you (as they do here). Oh--I also miss
Maine politics. I still think of Olympia as _my_ senator

politicos out here!

I called the Exiles store yesterday to order another T shirt and
told the lady I talked to about wearing my Born in
Maine-Living in Exile shirt to the Civil War re-enactment in
Gettysburg PA last summer. There was a gentleman there who
played the role of Joshua Chamberlain. I stood in the
crowd listening to him explain the battle that was about to
take place (The battle of Little Round Top) for about a
half hour when he looked over at me, then at my shirt,
leaned over and said "I like your shirt", then went back to
explaining the battle!
