Hey B.T. boy did I have to eat my words...Roanoke got 18 inches (the most in 13 years) and Philly got 22. My flight was canceled and I had to camp out in Ben Gurion airport for 36 long tedious hours. I should have never mocked the weather gods...I was just asking for it LOL but finally after 48 hours I am safely home.

Greetings from one homesick for Maine person to others.  I have been this way for sooooooooo many years and wish I was rich (not famous) and just had the funds to move back home and stay there until I die!!  At the age of 67 I have yet to really figure out why Maine has such a draw to me-course was born and raised there, graduated from Higgins Classical Institute at the age of 17 (or 50 years ago this coming June), have lived in so many places worked as a library director from one end of the US to the other, actually lived in some b'ful areas, but not one place has ever replaced Maine!!

Greetings from the old city of Jerusalem...it is my 54th birthday and my last night in Israel. I have had a wonderful time but it is time to go home. Meanwhile my home town of Roanoke is facing its largest snowfall in at least 13 years...they are calling for 16 inches and the governor has declared a state of emergency and advisied residents to expect to be on their own for up to 72 hours. I had to laugh...it would be just another winter's day in Maine. I am not worried though...my flight is direct from Tel Aviv to Philly and then to Charlotte NC...both big airports and so they actually use snow plows to clean the runways...Roanoke on the other hand employs a little old woman with a broom to clean theirs and she might not be done by the time I arrive Monday morning. LOL LOL LOL

To S.B. in Sun City, Fl.
I'm not sure of the exact for Maine Day in Zephyr Hill, but I know it is in February. The first time I went I got the info thru the chamber of commerce in Zephyr Hills.

I think I wrote a post last Christmas about waiting for the Firetruck and the Milbridge Volunteer Firemen to bring a box filled with hard candy and popcorn to my sister and me on Christmas Eve.  The Firefighters still do this for every child in Milbridge, a tradition for over 50 years.  I think they do it the weekend before Christmas now, not Christmas Eve, but it is still a vivid memory of my childhood.  We used to trek into my Dad's woodlot and pick out our tree as well, but I really remember tipping and gathering brush so my mother could make wreaths.  The house smelled so wonderful with all that balsam fir in the house.  I make lots of fudge and candy, like needhams, for the the holidays just like we used to do when I was young and we always make Lobster Stew for Christmas Eve dinner.  You can take me out of Maine, but you can't take the Maine out of me.

I'm going to Boston to meet my new granddaughter this year and guess I'll have a chance to experience the cold and possibly snow.  I don't miss that!  North Carolina is expecting a dusting of snow tomorrow (Fri, 12/18)  It's our last day of school before the holidays...the kids are wound up for vacation, I don't think I need to add snow to the mix.  PE class just might be running and catching snowflakes on our tongues if it really happens!  Happy Holidays to you all!

Greetings
Does anyone remember the house close to Lamoine Beach in the 60's decorated for Christmas?  I went there with my parents and took pictures in black and white (I was a child.)  My dad and I alwaya went out in the woods behind our house to get a Christmas tree, one candle with a blue light for each window; the minute I got home from school during Dec. I would go throughout the house and plug in all the Christmas lights and then watch a Santa show--I think Eddie Driscoll was on the show.  To me Christmas lights are enhanced when snow is all around....always wanted a Christmas tree live and growing in the yard to put lights on....

One of my favorite "Christmas in Maine" memories is going into the woods to find a real, natural Christmas tree. My brother, sister and I would take off down the hill to the woodlot behind our house with only a small saw for a tool. We'd find a tree, wear ourselves out cutting it down, only to face the all-uphill half mile trek back to the house. We'd haul it into the basement and discover we'd brought home a tree tall enough for the statehouse!

Hard work, but always fun.

can't believe what i have just stumbled upon.  I had no idea there was a website out there dedicated to people that feel the same way i do!  I was born and raised in Saco, because god loves me.  I took it all for grantid and thought that there was so much more to the world than just maine.  Now all i do is make plans to go back. this will be my second time going back in 2009 (dec 23 - jan 2) and i am wicked excited!

Heather, i used to drive around all the time, it didn't matter what time of year.  I loved going down to biddeford pool when it rained, up to Millinocket for fall or just to go camping, or tooling around OOB for the summer. Christmas was always a great time to drive around.  there was always a little neighborhood that went all out with christmas decoratations in biddeford by the KofC building on pool st. next to West Brook skating rink.  I loved stopping by to see what they had up.
