Left Maine 14 years ago when I met and married my husband who was then in the Navy. He's retired now, and we'd LOVE to get Ann back HOME where she belongs... it's true. You can take the girl outta Maine, but you can't take Maine outta the girl.

I just got a message from an old Narraguagus HS classmate, who is living in Tampa now and she said they had freeze warnings as it was  down to 26 degrees late evening, may damage strawberry crop.  I went down to Glendale  yesterday and it was near 80. Here in  central AZ it has been one of warmest Januarys  since I have been here 60's bout every day.

I woke up to a little bit of Maine today!  SNOW!  It's currently 24 degrees and we have about 2 inches of fresh snow here in the Raleigh area.  No School!  I've already got the fire going and instead of a good book, I'm curled up with my computer.  Since I work in a year round school, I'll have to work some Saturday in the future to make up the day, but guess I'll not worry about it now and just enjoy a little taste of home.  The good thing is, this will be all gone in 24 to 36 hours and we'll be back to 50 degrees again.

I didn't want to post another message, but the website brought me back here again.
I wanted to read other messages from fellow Exilers.
I've posted in here before.  But it's been a long time.
Originally from Avon, Maine.  Living in Lexington, NC well over half my life now.
There isn't anything I don't miss about Maine.  Well.............come to think of it, we eventually moved to Strong.  And the road wasn't paved in front of our house.  As if that wasn't bad enough by itself, there was a logging operation directly across the road from my parents' house.  That was the first year I had to deal with mud season personally.  Also the first year I had my driver's license.  That is one experience I have no desire to ever have to deal with again.
But I miss the people, the smells, the clear and clean air, the small towns, the feeling that everyone is family even if they aren't related, the food.  The changing seasons.  The accent.  I tried so hard to keep my accent.  Impossible to do when you don't hear it all around you.  After living down here since 1968, there are still people down here that don't understand my accent.  But when I'm lucky enough to go home, no one at home understands me any more, either.

The older I get, the more I miss home.  I truly believe the saying, "Maine....the way life should be" is very, very true.

Just flew into Portland and drove up to Fort Kent. I know the County is not DownEast
but the drive was spectacular. Roads were dry with only spotty patches of black ice and I only saw one moose in the Bridgewater/Monticello area just between Presque Isle and Houlton despite the signs stating that Moose are everywhere between Falmouth and Madawaska. When I left it was
-43 in Grand Isle and the car was solid as a block of ice. Driving south on Rte one I had to chuckle as I saw the sign "Welcome to Maine, the way life should be".

I just  couple of pics from friend in Presque Isle area, thermometer in his truck would only go to -40˚ so he had to get out regular thermometer and it looked like it was hitting -50˚. Only 100˚ difference in my temp here in AZ and PI.

Haven't been back to Maine for years and after hearing their weather report, it doesn't look like I will be going there anytime soon.  Have been looking for a retirement home is Arizona (Surprise and Glendale areas).  Now I'm looking into Henderson Nevada.  Maine was great but way too cold for my blood.  I've been in California for 40 years, and don't think I will ever go back to Maine except for the what they call summer (70 degrees if you are lucky).  My foster brother still lives in South Paris Maine and wouldn't dream of leaving it.  I think the cold has distorted his brain.

I was born in Belfast me. and grew up in Searsport, home of THE VIKINGS. I am in exile thanks to govenor "B", unable to find a decent job. What I miss most is the smell of low tide, the big hearts of us Maineacs. The term Mainer was made up by and for people from AWAY. Maine will always be HOME. Here in Maryland and states much closer to home it is near impossible to find red hot dogs or Moxie. Life can be a struggle. One day we, my wife and I hope to be able to retire to Eastport(MOM'S place of birth/my roots)and enjoy the sun rise and LOW tide.
