I'm flying to Portland on the 21st and staying through July
8th. Have a job interview while I'm there and housing is all
taken care of when I move back up in mid-August. It looks like
it's finally gonna happen. Home at last......

I came back to Maine last August. Flew from Charlotte to
Boston, and took Amtrak the rest of the way. My best friend was
waiting @ the train station with a Amatos Italian and a moxie.
Touched base with my bus driver buddies @ the Metro, reconnected
with some family and got the accent re-charged.
I really miss Maine, but I'm really glad I missed last winter

Karen in Portland:
Come home to Maine. Something deep within you is calling you
back.
My hope is that there will be a great in-gathering, and we will
declare our independence.
There are many people moving here from California and Texas
already.
Best Wishes,
Fritz Spencer

....Every Memorial day in the small town of Gray Maine
halfway between Portland & Lewiston all the veterans graves are
adorned with American Flags placed there by school children. All
but one, he does not get an American flag.......In 1862 and town
resident Lt. Charles Colley was stuck down at the battle of
Cedar Mountain in Virginia. As was the custom back then his
parents paid to have his body returned to Maine, otherwise it
would have been buried on the battlefield. When the body arrived
Mrs Colley wanted to see her son one last time. The casket was
opened and the body of a Confederate soldier in full uniform was
inside. Somewhere below the Mason Dixon line far from home a
family had lost a son. When the War Department was notified of
the error they told Mrs Colley that they have found her son and
is sending his casket, but do not send the mistaken one back.
The Colley family took it upon themselves and buried the Rebel
soldier, after all it was someones son. When the Civil War ended
the Ladies of Gray's Veterans raised the money and erected a
white headstone that simply read " A Stranger, a soldier of the
Great War died 1862." .......This veterans grave is adorned with
the flag of the country he fought and died for, the Stars and
Bars of the Confederate States of America. Word has spread about
this unusual story and people come from all over to see the
grave. Even Confederate re-enactors frequently journey to Gray
and hold Memorial services for its Unknown Soldier.......AS for
Lt. Colley his body arrived about a month later and was buried
within sight of his former foe. A tree has grown between the
graves. It has two trunks rising from one common root. Make of
that what you will............God bless all who gave their all
this Memorial Day. Thay will never be forgotten.

I am posting on my iPhone from my father's driveway. There
isn't much signal, but who cares? The air smells great.
I have been home for almost a week. My primary reason was to
visit family, but it worked out that one of my mentors and
colleagues from Ithaca conducted this year's Maine All-State
Chorus. I traveled to UMO on Thursday for the first rehearsals
then went to the concert at Bangor High School on Saturday. It
was *incredible*. Roughly 250 of Maine's best high-school
singers working with one of the country's best choral directors
provided a sublime musical experience. Describing the whole
thing would take too long and not even come close to the
reality. My colleague made those kids work hard. She was
satisfied with nothing but their best and they gave the best
they had. I was proud to be a product of Maine music education
*and* of Ithaca College. It was a full-circle moment. I also
loved seeing my old teachers and friends from my youth.
First night back in Maine, I went into Sonny's Pizza in
Fairfield. Their door was open. I got a ham Italian, a Moxie,
*and* bit by a blackfly. That's when I realized I was truly
HOME.
Goodnight from Maine!

Hello from the other Portland. I was exiled 4 generations ago
when great grandpa Francisco Major Worcester exiled to live in
Seattle. I love reading your stories and postings. I feel like
you have part of my heart. If there are any Worcesters still
around Columbia Falls and your family connection is through
Samuel Cummings and Rosina Worcester then, just so you know,
there is a whole group of us out here on the west coast. My
great Aunt, Franks youngest daughter is still living at 98 yrs
old. What a kind and gentle man he was and I hear he could
really dance the jig. Is that something from Maine culture or
just from rolling logs all his life? Thanks for your time.

My sister and Aunt are flying in from Bath on Thurs. They
are meeting my other sister and I here, and we are going to
South Carolina for a week. None of us have been there so we
thought that would be someplace different to go. I will still
get to Maine this yr but probably for a long weekend around July
or Aug. I've been down here since 62 and still have a lot of
the northern accent. I love Maine and always will. I always
get my steamers, fried clams, Amato Italians, lobster rolls, &
Fat Boy's whenever I'm up there.

Hi Everyone. I haven't posted in ages because we are
focusing on escaping the nightmare that is WI and getting back
to Maine this year. Working ceaselessly on the house to make
sure it is the standout property in its price range when we list
it. We miss Maine and have come to realize better to have less
income and be happy, than to have a moderate income and be
miserable. Hoping to be back in Maine by the end of 2008.

The next best thing to going home to Maine is having family
from there come visit. My nephew stepped off the plane last
night to temps near 70 degrees. He said he had just left about
3 new inches of snow and was happy to be someplace warmer.
I just finished making the best lobster stew ever and it is
mellowing on the stove. (Lobster he brought with him, another
great reason to have family come!) We planned to have that
tonight, but just got invited out to dinner,so it will be even
better tomorrow when we enjoy it for lunch.
We have been experiencing a horrible drought here in NC, and
wouldn't you know, it is cool, drizzling and not the 80 degrees
from yesterday, but 48. Not showcasing the place much, but he's
happy, walking around without a coat saying the cool doesn't
seem to bother him much. I always say, 20 degrees or more is 20
degrees or more, going from 50 to 30 or 80 to 60, it's still
cool if that's what you're used to.
Hope all is well with my fellow Exiles, and hope you get a
family visit from home soon. I highly recommend it, it's almost
as good as going home.

Ahhh I do miss THE County a lot. Went to Jr High and H.S. in
Presque Isle and left for military service. I still regret that
I didn't go back once I was discharged, but when you're 22 and
have the option to go back home to northern Maine or move to Ft.
Lauderdale (when it was still THE place to be for Spring Break),
you tend to think different then when you get a few years under
your belt and really understand what "home" is all about...
Miss it every day. Ayuh, I do.
