I dug my long johns and my 16" Bean boots out of storage
yesterday, along with my down vest and an assortment of sweaters
that I don't normally wear here in NC. I'm packing right now
and my adrenalin is high just thinking about where I'll be 36
hours from now.
It's been 2 years since I was home for Christmas and I'm so
excited I could blow a gasket!
So Wayne, I know you live in Roanoke, and if I see somebody
standing on 81 North around 7 am tomorrow with a sign reading,
"Portland", we'll stop and pick you up. :)
Merry Christmas, ayuh.

We just made a batch of whoopie pies. Tomorrow, I prepare the
insides for Needham dippin' on Friday. Somewhere in there, I'll
make another batch of fudge (got two already) and my
grandmother's molasses and sugar cookies (I love some of the
directions like "shortening the size of an egg" and "add enough
flour to make the spoon stand up by itself"). Soon it will be
time to make a tourtiere pie, too.
Wish I could be in Maine for Christmas. In the meantime, I'll
share my Maine Christmas cooking with my neighbors and family
here in upstate NY. People are always blown away by the whoopie
pies and needhams! This year, we got the whoopie pies just the
right size for giving: I like to make many, many baby ones. That
way, folks who are watching what they eat can have one without
feeling *too* guilty.
Whoopie pies used to be a pretty standard feature of my
childhood at any given time, but my own kids view them as a
holiday treat because that's the only time we take the time to
make them. It seems the only other times I eat whoopie pies is
when I'm actually on Maine soil (usually at Ma's or Hillman's.
The Big G one is tasty, but it's a freak of nature needing three
or four people to take it down!).
Anyway, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all M.I.E.'s, to
all the folks who made it back home, and to all those folks who
never left. Here's to a prosperous 2008 for our beloved state!

Guess Maine is gonna have a good wintah this year....Have
lived here in NE Tennessee for 10 years and have never had to
buy a pair of boots and very seldom wear a winter coat. Still
have some land up in Lincolnville up for sale...contact me and I
will get back to you with a phone number to call as my older
brother Rosey Gerry is the one to talk to....I just want to get
it sold so we can maybe move back to Maine this next summer..
Merry Christmas and Happy New year

I was born and brung up in Kennebunkport. I moved to Florida
in 1999 to escape the cold and now live in Arizona because of a
job. I miss Maine in the summer (both days) and do miss the
foliage.

Coming home to Norway for Christmas for the first time in
many years. I understand it'll be a very white Christmas.
Dinner on the 25th will be red hot dogs and whoopie pies. Maybe
some brown bread, too.

I too am counting the days until I get home, A true Christmas
present I fly in to Portland on the 25th. There is nothing like
Maine at christmas, just the thought of it makes me so happy, I
can't imagine how I will feel when we land. Been home three
times this year and it is still not enough. It's nice to know
there are so many others out there who appreciate the way of
life in Maine, and realize how important it is. Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas from a former exile!
My wife and I spent 8 long years outside Maine, in the Boston
area, Chicago, and Louisville, KY. We were finally able to come
back this summer. I got an engineering job at Fraser Paper in
Madawaska.
Even up here in northern Aroostook county they've had some warm
winters lately but this winter looks like it will be a real
Maine winter!! We've got 2 1/2 feet of snow on the ground
already and we haven't seen the high side of freezing since some
time in November. Am I reminding some of you why you left
Maine? I admit I'd almost forgotten what a real winter is
like.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !! to you all. I see you
finally got your snow for this season. Alot more then was there
last year!I was there last year and was dissapointed that there
was no snow for Christmas. Well now I'm back in Fl. and believe
it or not this is the second time so far this "winter" that we
have been in the 40's. A lot colder then it was on Sunday, LOL.
Well it atleast makes you feel like celebrating Christmas more
when it is cold. Well I hope everyone stays nice and warm back
home. Bye for now.

Thx, Alice--I know there's an active Michigander group in
Perdido.
Hmmmmm, a foot and a half of snow in Bangor and record breaking
highs here. Both nice in their own way-

Missing Maine and my family, especially at this time of
year. I was born and raised in Bath, graduated from Morse High
in '59, so am an "oldie but goodie". Anyone else out there from
Bath? I just stumbled onto this site today as I was looking for
Seavey's Needhams. I guess the company that made them is out of
business? Does anyone know where I might be able to purchase
them?
I spent 5 weeks in Bath this past summer and had a wonderful
time at Popham Beach, having lobster rolls at Red's Eats in
Wiscasset, wonderful RED hotdogs, and many Amato's Italian
sandwiches...yum!
Hope to hear from some of you. Florida is nice and I love the
winters here, but my heart will always be in Maine.

I enjoy returning to Maine yearly to get that good seafood,
blueberries, and return with several cases of Moxie. I grew up
in Vienna, Maine which is the birthplace of Milton Bradley.

I will be heading up to the moutains for Christmas this year
. visiting my Mom in Hebron. I Cross the boarder every few
months and feel fortunate to do so . Something with age makes me
more home sick for this state (state of mind) more than ever
before ....
guess my ashes will have to be blown over Scarborough beach or
some where close when that time comes .
The people are more real, the air more clean and there is a
peacefulness that comes over you instantly ..and based on the
years of reading all these emails ...it just seems to be the
memory for us all.. Maine , the way life should be , holds true
.
what ever your dream is, to come home, even if it is for one
more visit, one more time .. just make it happen .. Maine will
be waiting for you open arms .

To Linda in Pensacola. I don't know of any Maine Snowbird
groups. I'll check around though and let you know if I find
anything.

Greetings Exiles!
I haven't posted for about a year. It was 80 degrees here today
- a bit "wahm" even for us. I was born in Portland and lived in
New Gloucester until I was 10 - we still have a place at
Sabbathday Lake and spend a few weeks there each summer. I
graduated from Brewer High School in '70 and UMO in '74. LOVE
Black Bear hockey. We've been to the Everblades Classic a
couple of times - awesome hockey in sunny Florida.
I have some many great holiday memories of Maine. We lived on
the highest spot in Cumberland County, so the landscape was
incredible. We even had our own ski slope. I remember getting
my first skis at age 3. It didn't take long to graduate to
Pleasant Mountain and Sunday River. Maine is a special place to
be from. We look forward to retiring in about 7 years and
spending at least 5 months listening to loons and trekking
around the most beautiful place on earth.
In case you don't know about
www.whoopiepies.com all
of you wanting something from home - I highly recommend the
peanut butter filled ones. OH, MY!
A safe and blissful Christmas and New Years to those in Maine
and those in Exile from me and my husband.
