Christmas in Maine..

Large slow falling snowflakes.
Christmas tree lights framed with pine green and snow white.
Red noses and cherry cheeks from the cold.
The copperbeech beside the art museum in Portland with its white lights.
Shopping the olde port during the holidays.
Driving up to Freeport and L.L.Bean at 3 am to do your christmas shopping.
Mulled Cider.
Skating Deering Oaks pond.
Cross country sking the western prom and the cematery after a heavy snow fall.
Maine women in the winter time...Oh those yankee girls can love.... they make coming in from the cold delightful.
The northern lights.

I miss Maine.

We, especially around this time of year, really do miss Maine. The Christmas season always brings back the memories of a simple way of life. (Like the billboard says, Maine the way life SHOULD be) We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Oh yeah, p.s. Keep Warm!!!

to Sheila Miller.  I too am a Freeport native.  Graduated class of '72. I'm not sure if we're anywhere near each other in age, but I'm racking my brain trying to remember if I knew anyone named Sheila.
Did we know each other?

I miss the seasons and weather. Living in So. Cal has no weather, really.  I teach first grade and it is hard for me to have my first grade students graph the same weather every day.  They actually get excited when we have clouds or the occasional rainy day.  I try to explain to them that some places have "snow days" when we all got to stay home instead of going to school.  I was born in Portland, raised in Freeport, married and raised my 3 children in Cumberland.  After my divorce in '91, I accepted a teaching position in the state of Chiapas, Mexico.  Having learned Spanish, I was then guided to California, where I have been for the past 15 years!  I have most of my family still in Maine.  My daughter is now in Arizona, but the boys, my parents and brother and sister in law are still in coastal Maine.  My husband of nearly 10 years is quickly learning the lingo and is torn between retiring to Washington State (UW alum) or Maine.  We are excited to be coming home for Christmas this year, on a "command from Mom"  issued last December 27, "Hi, and you will be home for Christmas 2007". What does one say to that?  I have been gifted several of the "Exile" products.  I love my red "Loving Maine, Living in Exile" T.  I have the "Maine Girl" T and tote.  I really like the quality of that shirt, and am able to use it to "dress up" jeans here in So. Cal.  We also have the cassette Maine Christmas, which sings me home on the freeway all of December.  Happy Holidays to all!  Keep the snows coming--we are dreaming of a white Christmas!

I'll be heading back to Maine on the 15th and I am counting the days!  This will be my 5th trip home this year and I feel I am truly blessed to be able to go home when I want or need to.  I'll be there for 2 weeks this time.  We surprised our kids and families and showed up for Thanksgiving but it was just too short a visit.  I am looking forward to the snow.  Yesterday was 80 degrees here and it is hard to get into the Christmas mood when it is that warm.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all the wonderful Maine Exiles!

Sitting in the High Desert of Southern Cali wondering what the heck?!?!?  It is cold and raining with a possibility of snow.  We did make a trip to Maine in November, but only for 1 week.  It's always good to get back to Maine and reconnect with friends and family.  Wishing everyone a very Happy Holiday Season.

This is the time of year I miss Maine the most.  I have so many wonderful memories of past Christmases, and family gatherings.  I know I will never experience the same again, but I will always cherish my childhood memories of past Christmases in Maine.
Wishing all exiles a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!!!

Well, I've missed the first good snow of the season (AGAIN)...stuck here in Texas with the 70+ degree weather.  Well...that part's not so bad.  Sure do miss old Sibley Pond off Route 2 near Canaan.  Don't know if I'll ever get to move home before I die, but for those of you who have managed to get back...appreciate it, folks.  It's a privilege living in God's country.

Born S. Paris Maine; left for work in Washington DC.  I don't miss Maine as much as I might if I didn't return every summer for the past 40 years...and sometimes in the fall.  Love those leaf colors and the wonderful red hot dogs!  I miss Jordans!~

Not to be too much of a geek, but just noticed in my posting that I was pleased to be able to see family and friends while "their" not quite so busy.  Sentiment's sort of right, but obviously I'll be glad they are (i.e. "they're") not so busy and they are more likely to have a little extra time.

Greetings all… Better yet, Merry Christmas to All!

Been checking the site frequently as of late.  This’ll be the first year I won’t be making it home over the Holidays, so I’ve been thinking about it even more than normal (if that is in fact possible).  Don’t feel too bad for me; I’ll be getting there for a run late January into early February (hoping the Pats will be giving us more reason to celebrate right around then) and will have a nice chance to catch up with family and friends while their not quite so busy.

The good news is that LL Bean is helping keep Maine close to me out here in LA during this season (their Christmas ads are running nightly).  I actually worked at their Waterville call center two Christmas seasons ago and I find myself speaking of it to others and sharing the positive memories more frequently as the month unfolds.

Speaking of fond memories…Thanks LL of Plant City, FL…Pat’s Pizza in Orono was a second home for much of my UMaine time (as is the case with most Black Bears).  And I lived in Bangor during part of that run, so a State Street spin over to the Coffee Pot for the BEST sandwich was a must a couple times a month.

Well, don’t want to ramble on too long, so let me wrap it up with a very sincere Merry, Merry and Happy, Happy to all!

-Joel (from Albion...always)
