A little bit of home on this page. What a way to pass the day,
log on and remember the way life was for us all! But still
is for all of those still there. I also left 9 years ago,
the economy was not as it could of been. I'm very anxious
to be able to move closer, if not right back into the state,
to enjoy those italians, pizza & fries at the beach, and
good old needhams, and whoppie pies! Moxie....eh pass,

be "home" - and every place else just a stop along the way

Been a while. Looking for help this time.
I can't get fresh cider on this communist island. I found
pasteurized cider and was wondering if I can use it to make
hard cider. It is made from concentrate but I'm not sure
whether or not it has any preservatives. It says on the
bottle 100% apple juice. Anyway, if anyone can help or
offer any recipes, please let me know.

Hi everyone! I'm still missing home and hating the big Dig!
Any other Boston exiles out there? I'm heading home this
weekend, and am very excited. I'm getting married next fall
back home in Maine, of course -so I have a great excuse to
head home and visit whenever I want. I hear the person who
mentioned McDonald's bakery in Gardiner. (the McDonald's are
our neighbors!- I still think I live in Gardiner most days,
still refuse to give up my lobster plates for ugly Masshole
plates).
I sure miss wide open spaces and trees! It makes me laugh
what they call a park around here - my back yard in Gardiner
is ten times bigger than most parks! You all know what I
mean. Plus the ocean, Boston Harbor doesn't really count
with the pollution and all. I'd give anything to be standing
at Pemaquid Point right now!
May you all make it home for the Holidays!

military and traveled the world except Asia. Retired in '94
decided to stay in Germany with my wife of 24 years. Built
a house over here, tried to use as much American/Maine
styling as I could. We live in a small town, smaller than
W. Farmington in the rolling hills of the Taunus Mountains.
We actually got color in the trees this year. Yeah I miss

I have just moved to a place that is very much like Maine,
believe it or not. The Navy would not send us back to
Brunswick so they sent us to Oak Harbor, Washington. What a
beautiful place. It is not Maine I know, but it is a very
close second. Bald Eagles, super nice people, cliffs on
along the ocean, fog ( I lived in Hawaii for six years and
no fog.) I get to move to Maine in four years and I can't
wait but until then I feel lucky to be here and off the Oahu
rock. Would there be anymore exilers here, if so please feel

I would love to share e-mail with someone from home. None of my
family back home has a computer. In 1973 I lived in Hope and
went to school there until my parents enrolled me at South
Hope Christian. I lived on Hatchet Mountain and from our
deck we could see Mt. Battie. I could walk outside in late
summer and pick blueberries for muffins and raked them for
extra money. I would ride my bike to Hobbs Pond and push it
home. I used to listen to the Spider's Web enactments of
Star Wars, A Wrinkle in Time, and The Hitchiker's Guide to
the Galaxy. This of course lead me to frequent the Camden
library and amphitheatre and the bookstore when my dad went
to the barber. Because of the economy we moved to Kansas.
I just told my husband that I was sick of this beautiful
weather and wished we could have a good snowfall this year.
If I imagine real hard I can still smell the ocean and even
the dump in Thomaston which was another regular stop. The
only way I could get myself to stop daydreaming about Maine
was to stop reading the Down East Magazine (I still get a
fix once in a while) and tell myself that I wouldn't have to
stay in a mansion in the city when I get to heaven, God
would surely make a way for me to return to Maine.

Hi folks, my connection to Maine is long and strong. I grew up
just outside of Bangor and most of my family still lives in
the Bangor area (Hudson and Old Town to be exact). My
ancestors began the Town of Veazie, and I truly do love the
state and people as such. However I had to leave to pursue a
better career for myself and my wife. She is also for Maine
the southern/western part a town called Buckfield. My wife
Penny is a research scientist and I am a Loan Administrator
for a economic development company, making small business
loans to startup and expanding businesses.
We left 20 years ago because the economy was so poor. In
reading DownEast and Yankee magazines it appears that the
economy is improving some however not as quickly as needed.
Maines appears to be addressing one of its biggest problems
and that is the Brain Drain, young people leaving for a
better job and career. Well time to get off my soap box.
Rural Oklahoma is actually very similar to Maine in
topography and change of seasons. The best part about
Oklahoma is that even the worst storms in the winter only
last 2 to 3 days. Of course, you can always think of our
Tornados as Oklahoma's urban renewal. Can't wait to go back
home next summer and visit family and friends.

I grew up in the small town of New Gloucester and have been
attending college here in Boston for nearly 2.5 years. I may
only be an hour and a half from the maine border, but being
in Boston is definitely in exile! That's not to say I don't
love all the excitement of the big city, but I can't wait to
take a break from college on thanksgiving and see some
randomly placed trees. It's funny that real italian
sandwiches and Jordan's red hotdogs dont even make it down
here. Sure, every sandwich joint has "italian" on the menu,
but they often put lettuce, bologna, and even mayo on them.
I have tried many places and have been disappointed every
time.
I will be taking my New Mexican born boyfriend home with me
this thanksgiving for the 10th time or so. It's so amusing
to see his amazement at things that are so commonplace to us
Mainers. One night last summer when the fireflies came out,
he became most disturbed and asked me "what the #@$! are
those?!" He also didnt understand how we could sleep at
night with our doors unlocked. Well anyway, it's nice to
know that people are leading successful lives outside of
maine but still think about it fondly from time to time.

I was flying back to Portland for vacation and I was on a plane
leaving Atlanta to Portland, The whole back section of the
plane were telling this couple who were taking there first
vaction to Maine, where to go, what to do, where to eat...We
were all "exiles" going home and we were so proud of our
state. Where esle in the U.S do people come together like
family, the family of being from Maine.

There is certaintly no ideal place or thing in this brief life
of ours. However, for me the Maine Coast provides an
illusion of a life as "near perfection", perhaps it is all
that ocean in "Bailey Island and Harpswell" just stirring
the internal echoes of our own stagnant internal bodies
waters! Whatever it is Maine makes me think at times we
haven't ruined life with so much technology and illiteracy,
etc. even though I know that isn't true! For other MANIACS!
like me you know that part of Maine you love and you are
better people perhaps for your memories of it!Take care and
share any Maine thoughts you would like I love to write
about our fair coastal gem! peace, Jeff

Hello fellow Mainiacs! It is that season again. The air is
crisp and smells so good.
I really do miss this time of year. I have been living in
Southern NM since 1988 and can't say I miss the Maine
winters nor the humid summers. But come September and
October and I get nostalgic! Any other exiles from NM in
here? Drop me a line, would love to hear from you.

I was raised in Hampden Highlands Maine. Lived for three years
in Old Town. Went of to seek my fortune with the U.S.Marine
Corps. I miss the quality of the people where a mans word
meant something. I miss the wildlife, the wild berries, the
fishing and most of all the changing of the seasons. Would
like to hear from anyone in the Old Town Bangor or Hampden
area
