Born and raised in Windham, Maine but have been
in the Navy for 12 years. Luckily I was able to do a
4 year tour in Brunswick. But now I have been out of
the area except for yearly trips home for over 6
years. I miss the italians, fluff and red hotdogs.
My husband from OH just doesn't understand. I won't
be able to go home until after the new year for a
visit but my favorite time in Me is fast appraoching,
I love and miss the fall sop much there is not other
place like it.

We've been here in Wisconsin four months today.
(lived in Waterville/Winslow) We've run the gamut of
emotions over this move. Loved it, hated it,
loathed it, tolerate it, getting to like it again.
It certainly is different from Maine and not in a
good way. But at least my husband gets to see his
sister once a month now instead of once every 15
years. I just really miss my "ocean therapy".
Nothing like sitting on the rocks at Pemaquid to
wash all the stress away.
We hope to return "home" someday but right now I
have no idea when that will be. At least we can go
back on vacation next summer. Something to look
forward to.

Just got back from Maine on Saturday. I got to
spend 6 glorious weeks there visiting my kids and
family. Enjoyed lobsters, clams, and of course Fat
Boy's! Looking forward to Christmas when I get to
go back again (even if it is snowing a lot!) There
is no place like Maine.

My husband and I moved to Florida in 2000 because
we always thought we wanted to live here. Well, he
is real content, but I miss Maine and my family and
friends there terribly. We all make decisions that
aren't exactly the right ones unfortunately.

Hi everyone! I'm a Gardiner native, about to move
to Savannah for a great job opportunity. I'm
wondering if any Mainiacs are currently living in
the Savannah area and could help me with any
information of where to apartment hunt.......It
would be great just to have contact with fellow
Mainers so far from home.....If you have any info,
please email me. Thank you!!!!

To Lenore Williams.... run!, don't walk, it never
gets better. I have had a hole in my stomach for 16
years... don't be like me. I moved to Fl. in 1990
and have regretted it ever since. I plan on retiring
in 3 years and can't wait to get back "home". It's
where my heart is.

I've lived in the county, Washington County, and
now in the western hills. Trust me, the winters here
are harsh also. The coastal areas may be a bit
better as is the south. It took me 35yrs to get back
& I love being here again. I actually got tired of
the sameness of the weather in many places & now
enjoy the changes in seasons.

Hello, Fellow Mainers in exile!
I recently relocated to Virginia from Maine and
couldn't be more homesick (two months in the new
location). Moved to be near family in Northern
Virginia and to escape the long winters but have
committed only to the year(rented did not buy
property) as an elementary principal. I am thinking
I would leave now if I could. Folks say I will fall
in love with the Richmond area...but I'm not feeling
it. Wondering if anyone out there has suggestions on
how long to give this before knowing it was the
wrong move.

I grew up in Clinton, went to college at Fort
Kent, then joined the Air Force and they sent me to
Arkansas.
Have been home a few times, but wish I could move
home.
If there are any Fellow Mainers down here, e-mail
me, we can talk about the best place on earth

To Laurie in Dallas,
I've been in San Antonio since 1998 (with a short
sojourn back to the East Coast 01-04) and I love it
here despite the heat. But I do have to say that
the only "real" people I've met in Texas are in SA.
The people in Austin are too rich and too fake and
it seems like most of the rest are too conservative
for my taste, but SA is just right.
That said, however, the weather here this summer
made me wonder if I am living on the surface of the
sun rather than Earth. Today was a great day, the
high was 95. I had a wonderful time visiting the
St. Agat area in June; much cooler. I wouldn't move
back to Maine. The Mainers from the Central and
South parts of the state just don't understand how
truly harsh the winter can be in The County. Now I
am living in the opposite extreme, but at least I
don't have to shovel heat! I will probably be a
summer Mainer in my later years. That way I
experience the best of both worlds and I get to
speak both Spanish and French.

I have to agree with Laurie n Dallas (ugh).
Dallas is depressing, but it's a rarity in Texas.
Most Texans are like Maine-iacs...just plain
friendly and down to earth. Problem is it's way too
hot here and it isn't Maine. Going home to Canaan
after two LONG years for a month's visit.

Hey all you exiles:
I am putting together an "encyclopedia" of Portland
in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Please send me your
memories of the people and places
(restaurants/clubs, bands, movers and shakers, etc.)
of those decades...thanks much!

Oh this is so sad.
I came across a photo on
www.trekearth.com
of two Muslim women crossing the street in Lewiston
Maine. In the commentary underneath it stated that a
few weeks ago a frozen pig's head was rolled into a
storefront Mosque there. For those who do not know,
eating (or even the touching) pork is prohibited in
the Quran.
Prejudice and intolerance are such sad and ugly
things and it doesn't matter its focus. Race or sex,
which we have no control over, being born what we
are, or against religion which is nothing less than
our approach to the ineffable, it is all obscene.
To our new Mainer's I would say, forgive them who
did that, they are ignorant and don't know any
better (though they should) Most of the Mainer's I
have been blessed with knowing are honorable and
decent people.
Without compassion we are no better than our
prejudices.

Lived just outside of S.W.Harbor, on MDI. for

Foglebergs "The Reach" Haven't stopped crying. My
heart is there and I go back almost every year to
visit it. My dream--to move back.

I grew up in Turner, went to Bates College in
Lewiston, and then moved to Dallas, Texas after I
graduated in 2003 from Bates for employment
reasons. I miss Maine, and unfortunately I only get
back to ME about once a year.
I must say, I find that the people from Maine are
much more genuine and honest; they are real, none of
the pretentiousness Dallas is so famous for...There
are many great people here in Dallas, but it is not
home! I miss the people the most.
Unfortunately I do not think that I will be
migrating back north any time soon because I am
applying to medical school. I am now a Texas
resident and that makes tuition much more affordable
in state here. Despite this, I am certain that I
will live in Maine again someday. I miss the
mountains and the oceans and natural lakes (they are
all man-made here) and somehow people don't
understand masshole jokes in Texas (I need to get
some new jokes)...what it means to be from Maine
(cant find poland spring water here either!)
If you are a Mainer displaced in Texas or the Big-D,
send me an email and we can commiserate!
