Having lived here since 1990 my family and myself have
tollerated the South. But there's no place like "home" being
Buxton, Maine. We had tried to move back several times and
found that we had become accustomed to the less expensive
way to live in the South. I very much enjoy arriving into
Maine, and my heart tugs every time I leave. We have
relatives that live there, so we will always have a reason
to return. And maybe some day buy a retirement place to get
away every so often.

Look forward to hearing from fellow Mainers originally from

I left Maine for college in 86, and have been in Austin Texas
ever since. I got my degree in Architecture, and couldn't
find work in Maine. Jobs were easy to find down here though,
so I stayed and I have been here ever since. The summers
here are brutal, and the land is bare and dry. I miss the
woods, and seasons, and lack of poisonous creatures.
I would like to here from any other MIE in the austin area.

Hello out there to all my fellow M.I.E.s. I don't know about
the rest of you folks, but my ideA of a white Christmas is
NOT frost on everything from the ice fog that has been here
for a week and not one flake of snow!!! If it's going to
hang in the 20's all day and night witH 100% humidity, why
not let it snow?
I've been out here in Idaho since '95 when Uncle Sam sent me
up here from Utah with the Air Force. When they wanted me
to retrain involuntarily, I basically told them "ya can't
geT me there from here." As a result, I am now in the
Idaho Air National Guard serving An Active Guard/Reserve

I'd love to hear from any other MIEs out here in the western

have been stationed where we begged not to go --- south. The
hottest Maine day does not even compare to what it is like
here in August....

I was not born in Maine but my parents were and I have visited
this state with them when I was a little girl before I moved
to TX.
Anyways the reason I am writing to you now is to ask you for
some help and I hope that you can help me. In 1995 or 1996
my Dad moved back to Maine from TX. Well on December 25,
1999 my Dad passed away while staying in a Nursing Home (or
something like it) in Mars Hill, ME. The memorial service
was to be at 2:00pm today (12-28-99) at Wesley Methodist
Church in Presque Isle, ME. There was to be no graveside
services. The reason I am writing to you now is because I
would like to be able to find an obituary on my Dad from one
of the local newspapers (or one around there that might have
had it in their paper). If you could help me on this I would
greatly appreciate it! I have RSDS and I was unable to come
up there for the services and I would love to have something
to remember my Dad by! If you can not help me at this site
please let me know and maybe you could direct me to someone
who could.
Sincerely,
Becky Childers
P.S. Oh yeah my Dad's name was Herbert Elmer Brewster and he
was born May 17, 1924 and passed away on December 25, 1999
at the age of 75.

Hi y'all, its been a bit since I logged on, I can't believe all
the M.I.E.'s in this part of Florida.. I'd love to know more
about that reunion of Mainers someone mentioned that happens
in Deland in February. Now that would be a real good time
down heah. Want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas
and a Happy, Healthy New Year. Looking forward to a visit to
the Great State of Maine real soon.
I do remember King Cole potatoe chips, they were located at
Cash Corner in So. Portland, and unfortunately went out of
business many years ago..I remember nickel bags of chips
like the ones we pay an arm and a leg for now. Yes, I too
miss Ken's clam cakes, they were the best.
I met another M.I.E. down here not far from where I live, we
have tons of stuff in common and its great to heah that
Maine twang, its so distinctive! Ted Williams (Boston Red
Sox) lives just up the road a piece, and we see him
occasionally, much nicer now than he used to be. His museum
is on the corner of C.R. 486 and Citrus Hills Blvd. its
really good to go there every few months and absorb some of
that New England feel..even if it is Boston.
Will close now, this is getting wicked long...I could go on
and on... miss y'all

Christmas time is one of two times that I miss Maine the most
(the other is summer). Snow, lights, family gatherings and
the smell of pine outside, not just in the house. We spent
Christmas in Maine last year and it was wonderful, even
though there wasn't any snow where we were, just bitterly
cold. My parents, years ago, sent me a tape of a song of
Christmas in Maine. It isn't Christmas until I listen to

How be ye? Been a long time since I had the chance to browse
Exiles. My son, Tom Burgess, recently visited Maine. Went
to the Fryeburg Fair together with my brother,
Curtis Gray. My daughter, Donna Burgess, also attended with
her sons. Tom sent me oodles of digital images of the farm
we operated as a riding stable in Baldwin, as well as the
fair, and covered bridge, plus relatives, etc. Makes me so
homesick. I am hoping to be able to visit late next Spring
(after the mud season) and catch up on some visiting.
We have a nice ranch (almost 3 acres) which will soon be
agriculture, as we will plant bare root Pilgrim Peach
Bushes in January. I have many adventures that I have
written
down, some have been published in local magazines, as well
as a pastel painting of The Shadow Ryder, a self-portrait of
sorts of myself and my Arab mare, Angel. Anyway,
think I am getting long winded, sort-of.

Hi! Wow-I found this site while looking for some animated
alphabets and when I saw Maine I had to peek. I am thrilled
:))) I was born in Portland, and spent my first 13 yrs there
before we moved to Durham where my Dad was born and died
there. I graduated from Lisbon High School in 1972, then
left Maine to join the AirForce in 1974 but had a fatality
happen to me while stationed on Guam in 1976 and because of
being on crutches for the next 2 yrs had to get out on a
medical discharge and due to a 14" steel rod in my leg I
unfortunately had to leave Maine because of the cold
weather. I then lived in Tampa, Florida for the next 14
yrs.until my rod was removed then we decided Maine with 6
months of winter would still be too much so we moved to The
Great Smoky Mountains in Knoxville, Tennessee where there
are 4 seasons equally divided and it would be a happy medium
between Maine and Florida. I miss all my friends and
relatives in Maine, have a sister in Richmond, one in
Lewiston, nephews in Durham and Portland areas. Would love
to talk to anyone from these areas and would be great to see
some old high school friends as I've never been to a
reunion. Sure hope to hear from some Maine folks soon, this
would be GREAT :).

I've spent several evenings reading the posts. Oh my........I
am homesick to say the least. Not much I can say that
hasn't already been said. How sad that there seems to be
one common denominator for us civilians to leave the
state....'making a decent living' Count us 'in' as part of
those statistics. We would have never left had we been able
to support 4 wonderful children. Opportunity knocked 12+
yrs ago and we openned the door. We all miss Maine very
much. Our oldest is looking forward to graduate school in
Maine in the near future..
I was born and brought up in Biddeford (St Louis HS, '70),
graduated from Husson College in '72, met my husband who's
from East Corinth and got married at UM Newman Center in
'75. We lived in East Corinth most of our married life with
exception of the last 8 months were in Glenburn. Like the
posts below, I have to add my 2-cents in some of the
foods/restaurants I miss the most. Governors and their
seafood is definitely the #1 place we miss most. Absolute
stop on each return trip. In fact, in August, we hit them
twice. They call catfish and frog legs seafood down here in
KY. No one has a clue what a whole clam is and you should
see their faces when we ask 'bay scallops or sea scallops?'
In addition to the donuts at Franks Bakery in Bangor and
Reilly's Bakery in Biddeford, I also miss something no one
else has mentioned...Ken's clam cakes in Pine Point. The
very best!....Claire Climo...ever find a recipe? Garside's
ice cream stand in Saco...Scotch oatmeal bread...pink fluff
(you know, for those fluffernutter sandwiches)...native
blueberries...Maine potatoes.
There's also some of the stores I miss a whole lot like in
Brewer...Epsteins, Landry's Appliance, the electrical repair
shop at the end of the Bangor/Brewer bridge that carried
EVERYTHING; Shop & Save in Bangor--'Hi' to the staff at the
Broadway store-- Boyd and Noyes, Picture & Gift. Nothing
here compares to their personal service. I must end this or
I'll end up going to priceline.com and buying
tickets.....lol. Would love to hear from anyone with same
nostalgic frame of mind

of that here. BUT - I will be retiring to Maine. And I'll

smile, but I also remember that some of the best culture
I've seen was in Maine. Growing up in Auburn, I spent lot's
of time at the Community Little theater watching live plays
equal to any small city theater in the U.S. Bates College
in Lewiston has a wonderful cultural event at least once a
month all winter... free of charge. See how much it cost's
to get into Boston's Wang Theater, and you'll really
appreciate that. So if you're just browsing, and haven't
been there, remember that ain't many of us what whistle
through ou-ah front teeth while holdin' a piece a straw in
ou-ah mouths.

i was born and raised near portland maine. i left maine with my
job about 9 years ago. i miss italian sandwiches and the
ocean the most. the smell of the salt water as you drive
past the marshes heading to old orchard beach with that
lunch packed with the great maine italian. its a place i'm
happy to always call home.
