I to am exiled to the left coast. When I got here in '83 and found no fluff I was heartbroken. Kind care pakages from my folks helped for a while until I had kids and they found my stash!!! Now I order it by the case from their web site http://www.marshmallowfluff.com/
For $26.00 you can have all you want.
I took my kids back to see the folks in August in Levant, now I have to find a cheap way to get red hot dogs with the good buns. Niether are found out here. Also I was able to introduce the kids to Amatos. You should see the hard time they give Sub Way. Its alot of fun to watch.

What a great site!  I just stumbled onto it a few days ago.  Born and raised in Bangor, graduated and moved to Arizona in 1977 and visit my family regularly.  I really miss Maine these days.  I read Stephen King told the 2005 UMaine grads to stay in Maine.  He said, "If you leave, you will miss it, so you might as well skip the going away part."  What a point!  For all of you exiles out here in the desert there is a New England seafood house in Scottsdale called Foster's.  Its been here about five years and I just stumbled onto it about a year ago.  It's the only place I know of out here where you can get steamers and a lobster roll for example.  They also have fried clams and other great entrees.  It's a bit more pricy than home but a lot cheaper than a plane ticket.  They also have a website, www.fostersseafood.com.  Also, there is FLuff at AJ's Fine Foods.  Well, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!!

Editor's Note:  This restaurant is associated with Foster's Clam Bakes of Maine fame.

My Born In Maine Living in Exile bumper sticker has appropriately bumped me into a few Mainers along the way.  While living in Seattle, someone asked where I was from in Maine.  We weren't from the same town, me Ellsworth and he from Blue Hill but I used to babysit for the doctor who delivered this guy's baby.  I like that kind of familiarity.  But being in Seattle, it did not turn into a big conversation--people are a little reserved there like in Maine I think.

Hello... I'm a true blooded maine-e-ac, born in Fort Fairfield, I moved to NY in 65, now retired and live in beautiful.. Sunshine State, and the many hurricanes. Been blessed so far! ;-) As you can see from my poem, I too... miss Maine and all its gloryious Mother Nature!

Hello Maine

By: Lavina Burgess

Hello Maine, so beautiful and grand
With animals of all kind, that roamed so free
For everyone to see
I looked out my window, and smiled with glee
And out yonder, by the big old tree
Was a deer and her fawn
Both drinking from the pond

Hello Maine, with hills and glistening lakes
It just makes my heart break
Remembering the times, of the many fish we ate
Cooling off, as we jumped in the lake
The hills high, and long
I could just go on and on

Hello Maine, as the snow is falling
And the air so clean
The hills, and their tree tops
With clean, white snow, thats up to my knees
I move to the right
And I make Angels so white

My brothers and sisters(all 12 of us)
I'm sure will agree
Would all climb those tree's
If they wouldn't get stung, by those darn old bee's

Hello Maine, what a beautiful sight
I close my eyes, and I do see
This wilderness State, where...
I would love to be

Hello Maine, with your Northern Lights
A galaxy of milky ways, with so many stars
So brilliant, and glamorous, and so far away
The face of the moon, looking down at me
While making a wish
And hoping it would come true

Hello Maine, so beautiful and grand
I'm writing this poem
Because I was thinking of you!

Recently got re-married to a wonderfull woman and can you imagine she's a Mainah to!! Funny how we found each other here, we're on the 5 year plan. 5 years and we're back "home" where we belong. We both miss Surry and the surounding area as well as Machias(my in-laws are from there, Jordan's don't ya know). If anyone from Whiting reads this please email me, my late sister lived on Gardner's lake.

I found this link ob the internet. It kind of opened my eyes as my grandfather use to say "Taxachusetts"! The tables have turned. I think I'll stay here in Nevada and protect my Navy retirement. Although my brother in Portland has a different idea. More people should move to Maine to make the ratio go down :)

Sometimes those Maine winters seem so long and you just wish you didn't have to face another. So the husband and I packed up and came here to the Fl panhandle thinking at least we'd be near the ocean.  Boy, be careful what you wish for.  The ocean is red tide, stinks and gives you respiratory problems, the people talk funny, and are years behind the times, but not in a good way,and I miss Dunkin Donuts. We used to love to drive to Brunswick on Main St for a plain doughnut and a real cup of coffee on a winter night.  Those days are gone but not for long. After only 3 months we're already planning on going back. People here don't recycle, look on your next soda can and see who the only state is to give money back. And the sad thing is this part of the state is so poor they could use an extra nickel here and there.  What was I thinking? I can't wait to hear ayuh again and smell the salt air from Popham Beach. I'll wait til spring to move home, I hope I can stand it here til then, but I'll never complain about having to shovel snow again.

To Richard in North Carolina, I completely agree with you.  I love the mountains of NC, and New Hampshire, and Vermont, and Montana, and nothing really compares to TX/Mexico Chisos mountains.  I miss Maine on occasion but I had, unfortunately due to a death in the family, the chance to visit this weekend.  It was cold, nothing different other than that.  And, oh right, the massive drug (prescription and otherwise) abuse of the community I visited not too far from the border with NH.  Altogether, it was pretty bleak.  Even the fall colors seemed washed out.  Then I realized this whole time I was missing something I had already brought to Texas with me, my family and my roots.  I can't wait to go back to the lake in the big woods over the summer but I will never move back.

To all my fellow exiles......No one knows better than I about the uniquie and magnetic appeal the State of Maine has to us all. After a 30 year military career I visited many states and countries aroud the world but I always seemed to come back to North Carolinaa a state with magnificent beaches and the most beautiful mountains anywhere. The cites are vibrant and alive and rural areas are warm hospitable places unequaled anywhere........ That being said I love the State I grew up in as much as anyone and visit it often.... but there are 49 others and each contribtes to the flavor and greatness of America..........Continue to sing the praises of our beloved pine tree state but please refrain from the negative comments about the other 49.......We are all Americans no matter where we live......Richard from Gray

Cookie,
That recipe is just like the one we make every year, I got it from my Mom.  I think she got it from one of Marjorie Standish's cookbooks COOKING DOWN EAST or KEEP COOKING THE MAINE WAY.  If you ever get a chance to buy one of these at a used bookstore or online, by all means do.  They were published over 30 years ago and are long since out of print.  I still call Mom once in a while to transcribe a recipe over the phone.

Last Christmas we made some needhams and brought some to a church function, nobody had a clue what they were!

My wife and I are getting ready for a trip to Maine over Thanksgiving to visit parents in Winslow and Millinocket.  Here's hoping for some snow while we're there! (Just so the driving's not too bad getting there and back.)
