To Mr. Weigand
You don't seem to know what you are talking about. You
say the state of Maine has been overrun by liberals.
It would follow from your argument that Maine (run by
"real" Mainers in the past) was always a
politically conservative state. That's not true.
From my experience, Mainers are neither particularly
conservative or liberal. I would suggest you take a
class on Maine history.
Also, it would follow from your argument that vast numbers
of people from out-of-state (the kind of numbers needed to
politically overrun) are moving in. That is not
happening either.
As for George Bush, I lived in TX while he was governor.
He's not all that. He's just a rich man putting on a
front and a lot of people are buying into the whole
"cowboy" thing.
I agree with the others on this site. You should stay
in the South.

in regards to the political comments that have been made. I
hate the war and the killing of our boys. One thing confuses
me though. Under Saddams rule he killed alot of his own
innocent people, he was an evil man. This country went into
this for the wrong reason but we did stop him from his mass
murder of iraqies. If anyone out there thinks politicians
are out to help us needs to think again. They all have their
own agendas including Dean. Its not just Bush look at the
senators and congressman like they really care about us
common folk.

Hello fellow Mainers! I was born and raised
in northeastern Maine. I moved to New York because I married
a gentleman from New York. I miss my family and friends, the
Maine hospitality and the slower pace of living the most. I
came upon your site while doing a search for "whoopie
pies". My mother recently told me of a website where
you can order whoopie pies. I was curious about this site
because I have been making whoopie pies for years and never
thought of selling them. I will now continue to search your
site for more interesting goodies.
Have a great holiday season from a "Mainer at
heart"!!

A few months ago i was walking through our city market & as I approached a group of people I was asked if I would sign a petition to get Howard Dean on the primary ballot down here. Now I do not know yet if I am going to vote for him or not, but I do know I am going to vote & I know I am not voting for Bush. Well since I am a card carrying old hippy liberal & a firm believer in real democracy not the "democracy" the media forces down our throats, a black & white world view that rejects all alternatives as impractical, I signed the petition. While signing it one of his supporters described Dean as fisical conservative & a social liberal & asked if I had ever heard of such a beast. I replied that I had lived for almost 20 years in Maine & was quite familiar with them. That is one of the things I found most refreshing living in Maine...to hell with a knee jerk conservatism that compulsivily rejects (and viciously attacks) anything or one who disagrees with them.
This area is extremely conservative & quite vocal about it. For a long time now I have felt obigied for peace sake to whisper my objections to their depredations if I was in public. After March of this year when those of us (myself included) who objected to George's splendid little war & did so publically with protests & signs were verbally abused, egged (yes, eggs were thrown at us) & denounced as traitors (I am a vet thank you) I don't care anymore, now I proclaim my objections publically & loudly & don't care who hears. Their behaviour (I was actually told of course you have free speech so shut up already) was the antithesis to the democratic ideals they profess.
These people would not know what to do if they were confronted with a good old fashioned yankee town meeting, not one of those pre-fab ones they have on TV, but the real thing. The first time I ever attended one I thought it was so cool I attended them regularly there after. I was trying to describe them to somebody down here & said those old yankee freeholders really hold their politicians accountable & if one chooses to ignore those town meetings he won't be in office long. The ideal at those meetings is as one old farmer told me once...you have the right to say anything you want & I have the right to tell you that you're full of it. The hard right that siezed the government in 2000 wouldn't be able to handle that. They wrap themselves in the flag dismiss all those who object to their abuses as un-american, of not being patroits & of probably supporting terrorists.
The people in Maine should be proud of Susan
Collins for standing up & objecting to these people so
often. I would bet that there will be an attempt to unseat
her from the right the next time she comes up for
re-election, nor would it surprise me if she bolts the
republican party & becomes an independant. Fisical
conservatives & social liberals I have found are a nice
balance between both extremes...lets pinch our pennies but
lets take care of our own too...a simple human decency that
Bush & the hard right dispite attempting to repackage
themselves as compassionate conservatives (yeah right) are
toatally blind to. After all if a poor state like Maine can
implement universal health coverage then there is no reason
why it can't be done nationally except for our bought &
sold politicans. I don't know about anybody else but I am
sick of wearing a proverbable clothespin on my nose when I
vote & having to choose between the lesser of two evils
or the evil of two lessers. Enough said.

To George Wiegand:
AMEN!!!!! But I respectfully disagree wholeheartedly when
you say that Bush is an honorable man. I believe that he's
the buffoon, and he mistakenly believes that "we the
people" are behind him. Real statistics on Presidential
IQ's:
The lowest president's IQ- George W. Bush @ 98!!!!!!! The
highest- Bill Clinton @ 160. I'm not saying that brains and
honor go hand in hand, but I, as many others, believe that
Bush has led us down the primrose path that may ultimately
lead to the destruction of this country as we know it.
Remember this- he's an oil baron- so what do you think we're
really doing in Iraq?...........Before we invaded Iraq to
supposedly depose this tiranical leader, how many innocent
Iraqi people were dying at his hand (recently)? Not many.
How many are dying now? Too many. Let's clean up our own
back yard before we break down our neighbor's fences and try
to clean up theirs. The world wants us to stay out of their
business- unless they ask for our help. Vietnam II- here we
come!!!!
All in all, the great thing about this country is that we
all have the freedom to express our views, and George,
although I disagree, I respect yours.
Cheers,
Maineiac

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving.
Personally, I found out too late that no one here sells or
has heard of Bells Stuffing..but we made do. And when I
boiled onions, they were puzzled. "What do you do with
them?" Eat them, of course. Doesn't everyone eat boiled
onions with their Thanksgiving meal? Not in western PA,
obviously. I've been here 5 years, and folk are nice, but
it's not Maine. I get my snow blower out just to make sure
it still runs.Mostly it rusts quietly in a corner of the
garage.
Would love to hear from other exiles....or better
yet....mountain dulcimer players in Maine. I play a bit,

About your honorable? President. You forgot to mention
that he is still technically AWOL (away with out leave) from
the Texas Air National Guard. Also that he has no moral
right to be sending troops in harms way because he used the
ANG as a way to get out of Vietnam.
I do not know the political climate in Maine so I cant
speak of that, but if all that you based your leaving on is
that, you are reading from the wrong political text.

From a former Mainer from the old school ,
As I for most of my life lived in Maine , I regret to say ,
other than many friendships and aquaintances, I really do
not miss Maine , Not due to Maine's natural beauty ( though
i do not really miss the cold ) Its the political climate
that has taken Maine from the real Mainers and given control
to the outside so called city northerners (Bostonians&NewYorkers
Etc) like ten or so years they overran Vermont , now they
are overunning Maine, yes the ultra left liberals socialists
hardcore one sided enviornmentalists and the rich who look
down on the common working what once existed in Maine
widespread , The true Mainer had become the minority in his
own home state, How sad, Yes most likely Maine will support
a baffoon like Howard dean in its Democratic primary caucus
and if ( god forbid) he wins to run against Bush , I have a
feeling that Maine will end up a state that will fall to the
winnings of Howard Dean rather than the honarable president
we have now, How sad , but well thats my opinion, South
Carolina in many ways is eons ahead than Maine , yet it is
more from the old school of what Maine used to be like 25
years ago , I guess I am a South Carolinian now, As i can
still come and visit, I just got to remember to buy my
cigarettes down here as I cannot afford to buy them up there
,(A little humor)

Hi,my fellow exiles...Alice here..I was born
in Old Town---left to join the army--As for what I miss the
most-----everything--honest, witty people, food,
breathtaking land and ocean.....People ask me where I get my
wit and guts--it's from Maine..in the genes: quick little
story of an ancestor: Captain Sam: in 1776, at 80 years old,
he fought the British singlehandedly--killed 3 of them; they
beat him, bayoneted him, stabbed him 14 times, shot off half
his face....when the townspeople came to retreive his
"dead" body, he was still full of fight, trying to
load his musket---lived to be 96 yrs. old....
Sincerely, Alice (Born standin up and talkin back, just like
my fellow Mainers!)

I just read through a bunch of the messages
posted and got a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye.
Just waiting for my wife to finish her career and my kids to
finish school and then we have no more ties to this
unforsaken country. Don't get me wrong, waking up in
the morning and looking out my window and seeing a Castle in
the distance is quite beautiful, but it's not Maine. I
live in a small farming town 30 miles north of Frankfurt and
drive 25 miles to work (the locals think I'm crazy) then I
tell them about the distances between going from here to get
to there in Maine they somewhat understand. I read the
message from someone about putting plastic around the
foundation, my dad always used tar paper, slats, and bricks
to hold it down until enough snow fell to keep it from
flappin' in the wind. Storm windows went up in
September and down in April. My parents still live in
the house my father was born in and I lived my first 18
years, I just love going back and visit. I've been here
before trying to find anyone from the Farmington area that
may be close or wish to exchange e-mails, but haven't had
much success. It really gets lonely when I think about
Maine, I have a couple of co-workers that understand though
it's just not the same.
I was born and raised in West Farmington, graduated in '73
and joined the Army, I left the Military in '94. My
son and one of my daughters live in the states somewhere
(someplace other than Maine) and my other two daughters live
here.
I still work for the U.S. Army over here and all our
soldiers are dodging bullets over in Iraq. They are
scheduled to come back in April, except for a few. I
have two nephews over there too, my heart and prayers go out
to everyone over there and wish for their safe return.
Once they return we begin to draw down the Military post
here and send the soldiers back to the U.S..

The Chamberlands are not long for the county
of Delabodia (aka Delaware). We will be liberated from
exile in 3 years, one month and four days. It gives me
extreme pleasure to know that coming into the new year,
"04", we'll be under the three year mark. My
hope is the curse will be lifted in an expeditious mannor.
Not wishing my life away, ain't no life down here in the
sub-tropics. Living out of Maine is much like having a
venereal disease for which there is no cure, or like being
Canadian, same difference I suppose. Don't get me
wrong, I like our Canadian neighbors, so long as they stay
there anyway. Gonna be good to get back to the country
of Maine and leave this evil Republic behind. See ya
in three good people.
