Greetings to you other Maine exiles. I posted here eons ago,
and just happened to doing a little web browsing and wound
up back here. Originally from Millinocket and the Calais
area, I've been living in South Carolina for 16 years now.
I know the route up I77 to I81 to I84 to I90 to I295 to I495
to I95 blind-folded. I'll be making my umpteenth trip up
"Noth" next month and there's still no feeling greater than
driving over the Piscataqua River Bridge inbound!!!!

For all of you that wonder about affording a move back home, or
anywhere else for that matter. I came across a web site
that may help. Go to www.homefair.com/calc/citypick.html.
In left margin, click on salary calculator. Follow
directions and you will pick state to state, then salary,
then city to city. It will calculate what you could expect
to have to earn to make the switch. Also, info on schools
and the city you would be moving to. Hope it helps some of
you get "home".

Well fellow MIE's, I just got back from a 5 day stay in
Freeport. I'm still reeling with withdrawals and the sadness
that always sets in upon my return to NC. All my old friends
were there, we partied and ate lobstas and clams till we
burst. Went down to the wharf in S. Freeport to check out
the hahba and smell the salt air. We got more than we
bargained for, my friends car broke down and we ended up
spending 2 hours in the 90 degree heat waiting for a wrecker
to tow us back to town. It was still mahvelous! Somehow,
someday my family and I will return to Maine to stay and
I'll be a Mainer In Exile no longer......

Wakefield's Diner on Bridge Street. We were back in

lobster roll at Red's. Didn't have time to get to Bolley's

I've been in exile since August, and I leave Saturday for nine
glorious days in Maine! I'm surprised no one seems to be
from the Waterville area. The very first place I'll hit
upon my return is of course...Sonny's Pizza in Fairfield.
Then for dessert, I'll stop by Hillmans Bakery for some
whoopie pies and cream rolls. My visit won't be complete
until I stop at the Sea Basket in Wiscasset and Bolley's
Famous Franks in Waterville (sorry, I prefer the one in
Waterville to Augusta's). I may be able to fit in some
strawberry picking if I'm lucky. I'll be fat and happy until
I have to return to Louisville. To all you unlucky souls,

I just had a wicked wave of nostalgia reading these posts, and
am now overwhelmed by the urge to play in the water at
Popham Beach. My husband, who is from South Carolina, has
never been able to get into the ocean in Maine. He asked me
how we stand the cold. My method was to stand in the water
ankle deep until your feet are numb, then the rest of your
body doesn't seem to mind! Remember how it feels after
bodysurfing all day at the ocean...go home, and while you're
lying in bed, you can still feel the rocking of the waves?
God, I'm homesick....

I am so excited about this website. I am exiled in Indiana.
Have been gone from home (Veazie and Bangor) since '81. I
can't believe how many people out there feel like I do about
Maine---the home sickness I meen. It runs pretty deep here
for me. I am here because of the economy, and my
children(divorced). I am class of '81 at BHS. I was
scrolling through the mail and was hoping to find some one
in Indiana, but just see Ill. I am just outside of Chicago.
Are there any Maine-iacs out there in Ind? I miss the red
hot dogs, whoopie pies, but recently they have come out with
salt and vinegar potatoe chips here! Yeah! My friend used to
mail them to me from Bangor... And REAL italian
sandwhiched--not subway! I don't like chicago style pizza-I
miss Pat's in Orono! I plan to go back for a long over due
visit next summer! See you then..I'll be tuning in to check
for mail. I'd really love to hear from anyone who went to
John R. Graham school in Veazie! See ya!

We better keep our accents,as the world seems to be blending
into a "tv" bland accent.
A couple of years ago we traveled back to Maine with our

The internet is a wonderful thing! I'm exiled in Dallas , NC but
right this minute I'm listening to WBLM out of Portland -
the only station I listened to when I still lived in Maine.
If I close my eyes and allow the daydreams to take
hold..................
I'm sitting in my pick-up on the wharf in South Freeport
with the windows down in the middle of June. I've got a cold
beer between my legs and I'm listening to 'BLM mixed with
the sounds of the harbor. The sky is a mixture of blue and
whispy white clouds. There's a cool breeze blowing off the
water. a bouy clangs somewhere in the distance and Archie
pulls up in the old Novie that shuttles people back and
forth to Bustin's Island. Suddenly a sea-gull flies right in
front of my windshield and startles me - back into reality
and my office chair at my desk in Dallas, N.C......BAD
SEA-GULL!!!!!!!

Thx, Cynthia (from Katy,TX), for your very refreshing note about
accents. When I head back to Lewiston,
I tell our friends here in California that I'm going back to
have my accent retreaded. My wife was born/raised in
Queens, NY, and she just has to nod her head & people know
she's a Noo Yawker. As I've gotten older, I realize that
accents are all part of what makes us a bit unique .... that
rather than completely blend in with "the crowd", we have an
identifiable attribute that unites us in good fellowship
with strangers.
My wife & I are lectors at our church, each reading a
scripture passage in front of the congregation. We have had
people come up to us after the Mass is over to ask,
referring to our accents, "Just WHERE are you two from?!"
All in good humor & friendship.

retreived a map, and looked at all the places I could scour
for sea glass. I will go to CT to "meet" a former student
from 28 years ago! That will be such a blast! When I was a
teen, I worked in PA one summer, and was very aware (for the
first time) of my accent. Now I get it back each time I go
back and I love it! I don't realize how I must try to speak
"correctly" here, till I go back and find myself relaxing
and out comes the Maine accent. I love reading how there are
others that share the love of "our" state.

Hi!
I found this site last night and spent two very enjoyable
hours reading back to August of 99. I did notice that there
aren't too many from the county on here. Doesn't anyone
long for Houlton Farms icecream and doughnuts from Alice's
bakery in Caribou, Maine?
I am so lucky because I have been going back to Maine at
least twice a year since I left it in 1975. I have always
spent the entire month of July in Caribou and have taken my
children with me so that they could have a taste of what
made me who I am. It's a little harder now since they are
20 and 17 respectively and there is not a whole lot to do
there now that Loring has been closed, but most of the time
they humor me and come for a short time, anyway.
I now teach summer school at my old alma mater (CHS) and
that experience totally reminds me of who I am and where I'm
truly from.
I would love to chat with other Mainers and there must be
a lot of you out there because I could not get an email
address with only one M in Maine; they were all taken!!!!!!

On C.M. To quote Shakespeare, "Lord what fools These mortals
be." Better yet, "What a piece of work is man how noble in
reason, how infinate in faculty, in form & action how
express & admirible."

I love the great state of Maine and the nice people whom I left
behind. One day we will be back.
I visit this site to read about people who are as homesick
as I am and to see if I recognize any one I know who has
moved out of state and found this message board as well. I
love to reminis (spelling?). I miss the country side, the
calm people you meet in any town. I also miss the great
taste of seafood and lobster and having it so close at hand.
We are stuck here due to work and some day plan to move
back home when we feel it is time. We'll know when that is.
I HOPE!!! The thing I miss the most about spring in Maine
is my garden, I had alot of wonderful, tulips and crocus. I
can get crocus to grow here, not having much luck with
tulips. I'll just have to find something else. Hope all
you Miners in Exile are doing well and hope you can visit
home soon. I'll have to wait till next year. Take care.

Born and bred in Biddeford, went to Stella Maris, then onto
Saco, attended Thornton Aca.58 59. Moved to Phila. at 17 and
onward or I should say southward to Atlanta. Thinking
seriously about returning to Maine, probably in Portland
area. Raising a seven year old grandson, and I'm not sure I
want to do that here in Atlanta.

Born in Maine, lived in Portland area, left for Florida 1985. [Why
did we leave]Too expensive & limited employment
opportunities. We miss Maine very much but would have to
reduce our standard of living by at least 30% and with
retirement around the corner we are unable to come home.
Maine was our home for over 50 years and we wish we could
return. We now live in north west central Florida on the
gulf coast.Florida has been good to us but as you
know,[there is no place like home which is synonymous with
Maine]
