I was born in Machias, ME (first Lamaze baby there!), spent my

Hadn't been here in quite a while. Grew up in Orono, left with
my family as a teen to AZ.in the 60's. Married there and
then traveled around with my husband who was in the air
force. Just moved to CO from GA. It is beautiful here but I
do still miss ME for as long as I have been gone. Most of my
family still lives around the Orono/Old Town area and I keep
up to date with them thru email. The last time I was back in
ME was in 91 and I am long overdue for a visit.

It is summer & down here in the south the heat & humidity is
smothering. If I were any more clammy I'd have a shell,
indeed it seems flesh on the bone is too much to wear.
I dream of draping myself across a rock on Macaworth
island basking like a small seal in the sun. I want to watch
the fog slowly enshrould the islands in their cool, damp
haze or wander the west prom on a foggy night admiring the
old mansions. I want to pig out on lobster cheap; it is 8.99
+ a lb down here.
I have a deep, passionate lust lurking is the back of my
mind; I desire the wonton lecherous orgy of a good old
fashioned clam bake. Don't tell me I can order the works
from www.lobsterdirect.com, I know I can but it's not just
the same. For it to be proper in all it's decadant glory you
need a rocky shore with a pit lined with stone & seaweed you
just picked yourself with the scent of the tide & chilly
tang of fog off the islands & wild sea roses in bloom.
Lobster, mussels, clams, potatoes, corn & all the fixings
slowly steaming beneath their cover, the intoxicating blend
of scents; of sea, spray & food is so damn erotic I get
excited just imagining it not to mention drooling. And to
wash is all down shipyard brews. Can you picture it? I can &
it's driving me mad with desire. To hell with yankee reserve
& purtian restraint give me a clam bake!!!
I even miss the summer people, can you imagine? And
watching kids diving off the docks out at peaks island as
the ferry pulls in & sudden summer storms; God I miss maine
like a lover long known.

Hello! Maine's cooler weather is sounding good to me right about
now. It's been a tad warm this past week here in the
triangle area of NC. (Thank god for AC!)
To Jennifer in Gaitherburg, MD - My husband & I lived a few
years in the DC area and remember those "parking lots". I
think I learned to swear driving on the beltline and route
66.
To Andy in NH - regarding the Moxie fest in Lisbons Falls -
I was just thinking about that this weekend - I can only
drink 1 can of that stuff a year - its good, but "Whew,
it'll surely put hair on your chest!"
To Theresa in Concord, NC - I hear you about missing the
ocean - I'm only about a 3 hour drive from the beach (and 5
hrs from the "outer banks") - Carolina has some beautiful
beaches - but they don't hold a candle to Maine's rocky
coastline.
And to Adam in North Las Vegas, NV - I too, am orginally
from the Fairfield area - graduated 10 years earlier from
LHS. My dad always brought fresh bismarks (sp?) from
Hillmans for my brothers & I. They were the best!
Thank you all for the reminder's of home! (I love this
site!)
I'm going up to visit my family in August and can't wait!

To Matt in Lowell:
You think MA drivers are bad? Try DC. The only thing
preventing the mass hysteria and chaos of "rush hour" is the
rubber-neckers, who are at least 20 miles ahead of you,
slowing down traffic and creating a bi-state and one
district parking lot.
And you can just imagine what snow (that is to day, a

Just wanted to remind you "hard-cores" that the annual
"MoxieFest" is being held this weekend (7/8/00) up in Lisbon
Falls. Its a great celebration of the Maine-born beverage,
the whole town puts on a big parade and you can drink all
the Moxie you can stomach. They also have moxie ice cream
at the corner store....its dee-lish ayuh!
also, to you concerned citizens, I grew up down the street
from the famed "Humpty-Dumpty" plant. On my last trip home
i realized that it was shut down. It is a sad site to see
the building all borded up. I believe a Canadian company
bought them out and are now producing chips under the same
name in Canada! Blasphemy!?!?!?!

Just returned from Ellsworth, Maine on Monday the 3rd. Spent 2
glorious weeks there. Loved the warm, humid weather,
hearing the crickets chirp, looking at the stars at night.
Was disappointed not to see many fireflies this year. Ate
lobster, red hot dogs, had popovers at the Jordan Pond House
in Bar Harbor, visited Stonington, Cape Rosier, and a bunch
of other old "haunts". Attended an Ellsworth High School
reunion 2000 which was interesting. Didn't see too many
from my class ('82), but it was great to see such a good
turnout.
Now it's back to the cool Pacific Northwest, work, reality.
Have loved reading everyone else's account of their trips
back to Maine this summer.
By the way, saw the message from Jason Kelly saying you'd
spent some time in Stonington. My aunt and uncle used to
have a house down there and I spent many wonderful summers
visiting them there. It was as if I was so far away from
home! Also noticed you mentioned something about Gordon
College. I graduated from there in 1987. Did you attend
Gordon?
Hope everyone is having a great summer!

Wow...I just stumbled onto this site and I think it is awesome.
I was born and raised in Maine, and after I graduated from
Lawrence High in Fairfield back in '93, I thought I would
have more fun if I went out to see the world. I have been
in exile ever since, and just not feeling complete. I lived
in Arizona for 4 years, Oklahoma for 2.5, and I have been
living here in Sin City since September. I have certainly
seen other parts of the world, too, but now I just want to
go back home......Been planning a trip for a couple years to
see a Maine fall in October, and it just might happen this
year....sure hope so!!
I think it's neat to see that I am not the only one who
thinks that Maine is the best place on earth. The only
place I have lived that is even close is Flagstaff, AZ.
Sherrie, thanks for bringing back memories for
me....Hillman's bakery was a saturday morning tradition in
my family-the best donuts anywhere.....I still think that
Sonny's is the best pizza I have ever had, too.....And i
always get funny looks when I try to find whoopie pies
around here.....they always think I want a whoopie
cushion....They'll just never know......
Anyone else from Fairfield/WTVL? I will be checking back
soon......

Not a native Mainer, but lived here for one year growing up

move here to raise our 5 kids in small town Maine. It took
almost 10 years but we finally got here in '96 and after
living in CA, MA, RI, CT, and Florida, I really believe it's
the best place to raise a family. So for those of you
dreaming of moving here, although great paying jobs are

Maine. The only place I feel at home. Lived and worked at
Charleston AFS north of Bangor for 5 years. Loved the towns,
the woods, the mountains, lakes and streams. Fished and
hiked. Ate steak at the Red Lion in Bangor, Mussels and
clams at the Oronoko Restaurant in Orono. Dated the girls
at Uninveristy of Maine, Orono. Ate my fill of Lobstah on
the causeway to Bar Harbor. Picked those low bush
blueberries on Katahdin. Enjoyed the Blackbeeries on the
slopes of Cadillac mountain (searched for it but never found
the cah.)
The clap of Thunderhole in winter storms, the ice of frozen
Sebec and Sebago lakes and driving out onto it with your
car.
The drone of the endless Maine turnpike in winter.

Hi all, just got back from ME this morning. My vacation was not
as long as I had hoped-it started late as we were displaced
by the forest fire here. Oh well-lots has changed in my
area-there's a lot more traffic in WTVL -almost a rush hour!
Other things remain the same though-Smiley's ice cream
still has the best lemon sherbet! Yummm!!! Didn't get to
see a whole lot this time, as I was helping my parents move.
Did walk in the surf at Reid yesterday morning and had the
sea wet my shorts-nuthin' like it!
I met some great people on my flight back from Bangor last
night, thank goodness as we were stranded in Cinn. until
12:30 am. EST. Sandy, if you found this sight, please email
me back- I'd love to hear from you guys! Sandy was from
northern ME-can't remember the name of the town.
Couldn't bring myself to eat a red hot dog after I read the
nutritional facts-I did eat about three big bags of Salt &
Vinegar Chips though(probably would have been better off
with a hot dog!). Humpty D's was bought by a company in
Canada-I didn't think they were as good. They cut the chips
thicker and they don't make you pucker as much. I guess
that is my excuse for eating so much- I was hoping a
different bag would be better! Weather was beautiful and
muggy-hope everyone else can get back soon. See you all,
Beth

Just left Maine on Monday, went in for a quick trip to pick out
family stuff from my dad's house. They are moving to Arizona
and it's breaking my heart. They are tired of the weather
and there, I can't blame them!
They are leaving also so they can enjoy the slower pace of
Arizona. But to me, Maine is a much slower pace than
Cincinnati. But not as fast as other larger cities!!!
But while I was there, I had to have steamers, an italian,
red hot dogs, lobster roll and anything else I could think
of!!!
Still looking for a few people from Falmouth.

I did it!!! I, and my family clicked our heels together three
times, etc. and headed back to Portland.
We saw my youngest brother's eldest son graduate from H.S.
The grub run to Shaw's included an ample supply of Moxie. It
is completely safe around my wife and elder daughter(BUT,
they are 'from away'). No, none of it made it back to Calif,
the last surviving can expired during lunch between Chicage
and Denver.
We had a big get together on Sunday afternoon, all the
available relatives, inlaws & out-laws came to visit. Great
time.
I took my crowd out to Portland Head lighthouse. The 1 yr.
old just kept staring at the ocean. Perfect beach weather.
We drove up to the County last Monday. NOTE!!! I 95 is not
what it used to be. The old 95 is now 495 up through
Lewiston/Auburn, Waterville, etc. looks like calif traffic
on Maine roads. We found a better way (on the way home, of
course). Take 295 through Portland to Freeport, then 95 to
495's exit 28(?) near Waterville. BTW Maine MacDonald's sell
lobster rolls!!
Presque Isle is still about the same size as I remember it
30 years ago. There are lots of new bldgs. tho'.
For anyone who ever took piano lessons from Priscilla Jones
in Mapleton...my Grandmother is still around at 93 and
living at Leisure Gardens in P.I.
The Presque Isle airport has been sold or some such. The new
folks in charge have decreed that the trees and three very
nice houses on top of Dennett Hill( in the flight path) must
be flattened down to grass level. What a shame.
We spent some time over in the Province. Saw the Reversing
Falls in Saint John. Came back by way of Calais. The Airline
road is undergoing some serious widening. Most of it is
done. There's just about five miles or so that still show
evidence of the old twists and turns. It will be really nice
when it's done.
Had lobster at My dad's house. My daughter got up enough
courage to touch one of the critters..just before I gave
them a swimming lesson. Dad showed her how to get at the
meat. Again, Great Time..all too short, got back last night.

Hi ADH (snowonpines), Glad to see you still visit 'Exiles'.
Hope all is well. I will be visiting Maine again this fall.
It breaks my heart that the old family farm has been sold. I
hope the new owners will let me at least visit long enough
to take some pictures. ::(: At least your move will
bring you closer to the Atlantic. Just think of the day
when you can move to Maine, permanently!

Born in Maine; 4 years at Bates; 44 summers at Ocean Park.
I am feeling sad about the failure of Humpty Dumpty Potato
Chip Company and am still wondering whether he fell or was
pushed.

Going home to Augusta/Manchester for a family reunion over July
4th holiday. I am very excited. The things I am not
excited though about are the humidity, the mosquitos, and
things closing early. I think I am getting too used to
Vegas!

I'm heading off to Maine (Ellsworth) for two weeks on Saturday.
Am really looking forward to it. Will be attending a "Year
2000 reunion" of my high school the first weekend in July.
Should be fun!
Ellen from Madison, WI, you are right, many people have no
clue what whoopie pies are. I live in Seattle and I've
gotten more funny stares when I mention them. They sure are
good!

I was just reading sme mesages and happened upon one from a
woman nostalgic for whoopie pies. Ya know, no one outside
of Maine seems to know what they are! Whoopie pies alone
are reason enough to be a Mainer.

I'm in Kentucky and it's in the upper 90's, humid, and there's
no beach to go to. My husband's job is here, and in 2 weeks
his job will be moving us to NC. At least I will be near the
Ocean! But I miss Maine horribly. By the way, I made a
wonderful new friend from this board, so thanks to the web
master/mistress!
