I just love the openning photo on the exile home
page...I can almost smell the ocean & hear the gentle lapping of
water against the tidal grasses...the air is crisp, in the high 30's low
40's with just a hint bare a babies breath of spring to it. The islands
in the distance are stark with naked trees save the pines scattered
among them the the sky an asture blue with whisps of clouds...it could
be early november but the tingle to your skin & the seductive whiffs
to the air tell you its spring in Maine.

I am finally coming home to Maine after 30 years of
exile! I was born in Presque Isle but will be living in the Portland
area. I miss the people the most, as well as the ocean and fiddleheads.
My family moved when I was 6 and I have always missed it, despite
visiting every summer-it just isn't the same.

Basically I have come to the point in my life that I
need to return to Maine. Gratuated in 1968 from Bangor High and last was
in the state in 1973. I need the return of the pine trees, the lakes,
the smells, the Saturday baked beans and brown bread, the taste of true
seafood, the scenery, the people and the comparison of having been
around the world still consider Maine the best place on earth. I would
appreciate any suggestions to get me back there in a job in the computer
field.

Wednesday morning around 8A as I was driving home from
work in Norfolk, VA to Hampton in a driving rain storm, I approached a
maroon Nissan Sentra with a oval ME bumper sticker (with the moose).
Anytime I see anything from ME, I have to take a hard look. This
has never happened to me, by mear coincidence, I left my home around 6P
to pick-up my son and as I'm heading towards Norfolk, I pass the very
same car. Who was this guy????? LOL

home to the Belfast area soon. Although I am not originally from
Maine, I have lived there a while now and miss it very much!
Although I AM glad to have missed the worst winter in years there!
It's already warm and Spring-like here! Snow melted WEEKS ago! :)

When I first started working n Bangor I met a guy at work whose brother
was stationed with me in New Jersey. Small world is right.
By the way, my wife is embroidering your limmerick for us. Hope you

One of the
pleasures of living in the mountains either here down south, in new
england or anywhere for that matter is watching the progress of the
seasons up the slopes. We have a small mountain (1200 ft)here in
roanoke within the city limits & there is a slow spread of dusky
green advancing up the slopes...its about half way up now. In the
autumn the process will be reversed & the fall colors will
cascade down it. While it is pretty it still can't match the
wildness of the White Mountains when the seasons change.

To Ellic Mottram:
Boy was I surprised to see your name on this website ... I tried to
e-mail you at the address you listed and got an undeliverable message
... are you still there ... give me a holler. It doesn't look like we'll
get to Maine this summer again!!! when I read your message about the
seafaring clothes from your schooner days all I could think about was
you cutting your foot on the schooner last time I was at your Dad's ...
anyway take care and give us a yell!!!!

Into my third week of a 4 year exile. It's a long
way from Eastport and my wife and I miss home. But at least we
have our Marlorie Standish cookbooks so we can eat well. And once
the loan goes through we'll have the "old family homestead"
back home. I guess my 20 years in the service was a precursor to
help me get through some more exile. Love the limerick, D.K.

I officially have 35 days left, I am almost confident
that i have found every maine site out there and if i haven't then i
will before i leave.
My family and friends have started to hang up whenever i call, I don't
blame them because I know what there thinking "Oh NO! I can't stand
to here about Maine for two hours" Yep i'm driving everyone crazy,
but I can't help it I mean after all there is nothing whatsoever in
common between Nevada and Maine, I mean my daughter pointed outside to a
sagebrush the other day and said "look mommy, a flower", I
most definetly have got to come home. Good luck to the rest of you all.

Born in Machias, lived in Caribou, Hermon and
Pittsfield. Now out in California because they closed Loring AFB and now
at Edwards AFB. Miss the smell of the pine trees. All the food I miss, I
just order online when I have the cravings! i.e. Drake's cakes, Fluff,
Lobster, Fiddleheads, etc...

I am interested in moving my family to the Freeport area, my mother is
from Portland, and I grew up in the Berkshires of Mass. Currently
we live south of Boston on the coast, and I want to allow me four kids a
different experience of more space, and some different opportunities.
My job search has begun in both IT and Hospitality, and I hope to bring
my family to ME by summer.
I am an avid snowmobiler (since '72) hope my
job search will be fruitful. Thanks!

It has been a long time since I have been home to
"The County" in near winter time. I have missed the
beauty of falling snow and was treated to a wonderful two day snowstorm.
Nothing compares to the beauty of winter with a fresh snow fall. I
know, if you don't have to live with it. I was delighted to see
the photography my sister in-law is doing with scenes from Maine and
especially the old things we remember growing up like old barnes, potato
fields and other old building that will soon be a thing of the past.
They brought back a flood of wonderful memories from yesteryear and many
people are now enjoying her work. The older I get the more I like
these things. Hello to any Aroostook folks reading this.

My wife was born and raised in Portland. Her 5 brothers
& 1 sister all still live in Me. I was born & raised in Sanford.
After 4 years in Lewiston at Bates I settled in Portland where I met my
wife. We ended up in the White Mtn.s for almost 10 years. Then we
decided enough of snow. Now in our 40's we moved to Florida. We get
e-mail pictures of snow from family. That's all we need. We have no
regrets but we do miss Amato's italian sandwiches and Jordans red hot
dogs, and of course whoppipies.
