Hello from the other Portland. I was exiled 4 generations ago when great grandpa Francisco Major Worcester exiled to live in Seattle. I love reading your stories and postings. I feel like you have part of my heart. If there are any Worcesters still around Columbia Falls and your family connection is through Samuel Cummings and Rosina Worcester then, just so you know, there is a whole group of us out here on the west coast. My great Aunt, Franks youngest daughter is still living at 98 yrs old. What a kind and gentle man he was and I hear he could really dance the jig. Is that something from Maine culture or just from rolling logs all his life? Thanks for your time.

My sister and Aunt are flying in from Bath on Thurs.  They are meeting my other sister and I here, and we are going to South Carolina for a week.  None of us have been there so we thought that would be someplace different to go.  I will still get to Maine this yr but probably for a long weekend around July or Aug.  I've been down here since 62 and still have a lot of the northern accent.  I love Maine and always will.  I always get my steamers, fried clams, Amato Italians, lobster rolls, & Fat Boy's whenever I'm up there.

Hi Everyone.  I haven't posted in ages because we are focusing on escaping the nightmare that is WI and getting back to Maine this year.   Working ceaselessly on the house to make sure it is the standout property in its price range when we list it.  We miss Maine and have come to realize better to have less income and be happy, than to have a moderate income and be miserable.  Hoping to be back in Maine by the end of 2008.

The next best thing to going home to Maine is having family from there come visit.  My nephew stepped off the plane last night to temps near 70 degrees.  He said he had just left about 3 new inches of snow and was happy to be someplace warmer.

I just finished making the best lobster stew ever and it is mellowing on the stove. (Lobster he brought with him, another great reason to have family come!)  We planned to have that tonight, but just got invited out to dinner,so it will be even better tomorrow when we enjoy it for lunch.

We have been experiencing a horrible drought here in NC, and wouldn't you know, it is cool, drizzling and not the 80 degrees from yesterday, but 48.  Not showcasing the place much, but he's happy, walking around without a coat saying the cool doesn't seem to bother him much.  I always say, 20 degrees or more is 20 degrees or more, going from  50 to 30 or 80 to 60, it's still cool if that's what you're used to.

Hope all is well with my fellow Exiles, and hope you get a family visit from home soon.  I highly recommend it, it's almost as good as going home.

Ahhh I do miss THE County a lot. Went to Jr High and H.S. in Presque Isle and left for military service. I still regret that I didn't go back once I was discharged, but when you're 22 and have the option to go back home to northern Maine or move to Ft. Lauderdale (when it was still THE place to be for Spring Break), you tend to think different then when you get a few years under your belt and really understand what "home" is all about...

Miss it every day. Ayuh, I do.

Hi all,
I was born in Farmington, lived in Avon and went to school in Strong.  I was a member of 1967 graduating class of Strong High School.
I moved to Lexington, NC in April of 1968.
The older I get, the more homesick I become.
Just hearing from my cousins and friends in Maine this winter whenever they've had a new snow, gets me all excited, because it reminds me of how excited I was always when it snowed when I was growing up.
I miss everything about home.  Even the smell of IP!!!!
I have birch trees and a spruce tree in my front yard, along with a purple and white lilac bush.  Just because they all remind me of home.  Plus, I think they are beautiful.
I miss the small towns and the feeling that everyone is family, whether they are actually related or not.  I miss the fresh, clean air.  I miss the birds' songs, all the wildlife, especially the moose.  The crystal clear lakes, ponds and rivers.  The huge rocks.  The wildflowers, the ferns growing along side the roads.
I could go on and on.
I know I'll never move back to Maine, because all of my children and grandchildren are down here, with the exception of my son, who is a Biology Professor in PA.
But my heart will never leave Maine.  And when I die, my cousin has promised me she will spread my ashes for me in Maine, in one of the many fields I spent hours upon end roaming through all 4 seasons.
I met two really great friends on this site several years ago.  Would love to meet more.
As far as I'm concerned, Maine is the closest thing to heaven on earth.

Born in Augusta and raised in the Midcoast, I've always loved Maine more than your average black bear, even as a youngster.  But life goes by so fast, doesn't it?  I left in '94 for graduate school, and never meant to be gone this long.  Subsequent job opportunities led us to MA and VA.  Although I get to our Maine homeland several times a year, I always enjoy reading the messages posted here from the rest of us living in Exile.  Someday soon I hope to return, permanently, to enjoy the fiddleheads, smell of spruce trees, mossy ferny rocks, black flies, dry humor, rough roads, and all the rest I miss about Maine.

Reading these messages makes me long for home even more..  In mention, the comments made about getting off the bridge from NH, and visiting the Welcome Center and enjoying the scent of pine/fir.  That's one of my favorite events on the trip from ill-annoy - getting back to the scent of the Pine Tree State... My mind, body, and psyche seem to know when I'm back in New England -  even without a border sign!  It seems that the air suddenly seems fresher, and I automatically relax, for now, I am HOME!

A good stiff drag on a bottle of Moxie, and a couple molasses donuts, doesn't hurt any, either.

I awoke to the sounds of a loon call this morning!  I thought I was at home on Spring River Lake!  We have a lakehouse on Lake Gaston here on the NC/VA border.  The loon winter here with us.  They are usually silent, but this morning they were calling!  They are turning back to their wonderful black and white coats.  I guess that means they will soon be leaving us!  But will the ice be out?  I heard there is still lots of snow from Gray north.

Hi All,

Here in Citrus County, FL, we have a Coffee House once a month with featured performers from all over. Last night, Castlebay, from Round Pond, Maine gave an excellent performance of Irish music which I would recommend to anyone who can catch a performance up and down the coast from Maine to Florida, or when you are home. If you like "Schooner Fare" type music or Maine storytelling, you will love this group.

WE ARE MOVING BACK HOME! Can you tell I'm excited?  We will be arriving in Brunswick in late March and I can't wait.  I am going to be counting the days.  It has been nice living in lower Alabama but there is no place like Maine!  Wish you all could move back also.

Hi All, I've been living in self-imposed exile from my home in Maine for the past 4 years - I'm a teacher, and North Carolina beckoned for many reasons, they need teachers here, and they pay well. My home is in Machiasport, my daughter and family live there, and I get home every chance I get! I've got an old farmhouse, and some acres, and I know I am blessed- many people here in North Carolina have "fantasy lives" in Maine, and they enjoy hearing the  stories! I'd love to chat with people from Maine that are living here in NC...

I am not, and will not be called, a "mainer"!! I wuz born a "mainiac" and got to pick what kind. I'll be goldarned if'n I'll change so some stranger from outa state can understand and not be upset! Beside, I have people who will swear to it! They may not use the same definition, but they mean well!

Paul Andreasen
Originally from Seal Cove, and then Long Pond Road, Southwest Harbor, on Mount Desert Island. Course I was born there! You think I was hatched?  Born in Portland, in the big city! Why'd I leave? Judge said he thought I was made for the military...or something.   I am now in Kalifornia, land of the fruits and nuts! And we ain't talking the one that grow on bushes and such, neither!  Retired from the Air Force hereabouts, and can't stand to leave the weather! About 65 degrees, year round. Not half so boring as you'd think! Run a business here called Mount Desert West!! Figures, huh?

Retired from 39 years of teaching, and moved to the Bluegrass region of Kentucky.  Warm enough to actually HAVE a summer (with no mosquitoes) and a winter (with honest snow, or at least flurries, but not enough to shovel - I mowed the lawn Dec 1).  Seriously, I love Maine but hate snow, nor can I afford to live in Maine on my pension.  But I read the Waterville Sentinel every day online!  People down here will say, "Y'all, have a naaahs day, Hon" but I still reply, "Ayuh."

Bob, my mom passed away a couple of years ago but you may have known her: Carolyn Crane from Brewer. She graduated from Brewer HS in '54. My uncle started at Brewer but I believe he graduated from the Catholic HS in Bangor: Bobby ("Lefty") Crane. He was a year older.
